Treatment of BTL in the budget?
There is a real risk that the proposed punitive taxes on property investors will just end up being passed on to tenants in the form of higher rents, as happened when a booming Ireland tried this experiment almost twenty years ago. Indeed the only ones likely to benefit from this are those landlords who dont declare their…

Well done George dropping pension changes
Thank god sense has prevailed; I'm sure this will be revisited at some point but DC pension. Savers need every bit of help they can get compared with db and public sector schemes - this would IMO have been to the detriment of the young for the benefit of the old. Need to save money.... Deal with be edits and tax credits…

Houses in Hertfordshire earning more per year than majority of their occupants
http://www.watfordobserver.co.uk/news/14325979.Houses_in_Three_Rivers_earning_almost___100_000_than_families_living_in_them/?ref=mr&lp=16 Or, as the majority on this board would put it, "the free market is functioning perfectly". Make no mistake, I agree with the trend over the last 40 years towards viewing a lightly…

Energy firm Npower is to cut up to 2,500 jobs, more than a fifth of its UK workforce, with an announcement to staff expected this week. Npower, which is owned by the German energy giant RWE, employs 11,500 people in the UK and is one of the country's big six gas and electricity suppliers. The BBC understands sales and…

Advance Australia Fair
Or maybe not. 3 down and 1 to go as Mitsubishi closed car manufacturing in Aus in 2008, Ford closes in 2016 and now Holden announce closure in 2017. Sadly Holden mainly manufactures in Elizabeth, SA where a fair few of my rels live - most of whom have at some time worked in parts manufacturing supplying Holden. Which just…

London property market bubble?
Hi All, I've never posted on the forum before so apologies if this has already been discussed recently. I am a first time buyer looking to buy a flat in London. One thing that has been worrying me for a while are reports that the London property market might be a bubble about to burst. I have read many articles on the…

Is it worth living in London if you are in your 30s and earn under 50k?
I wasn't sure what forum to post this on but this seemed the most appropriate and just wondering if any others in their 30's think this? I am seriously considering moving down to Bournemouth, I went to uni there and have some friends still living down there. I feel like I have been left behind in London and there is no…

Savings ... something of the past?
Got some interesting info on savings today. This tagged with the current poor rates and likelihood of savings returning even less soon, is saving in the traditional sense outdated? "Around 9.61m (36%) households have no savings, while a further 3.47m (13%) have under £1,500. 71% have less than £10,000 in savings."

UK needs +7 Million immigrants to keep debt down
Something that has been completely obvious for some time. Good to see it being reported more often now, and some figures being identified as to the serious costs of reducing immigration. http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/2013/07/18/uk-migrants_n_3615076.html But as interesting as that is, it's only half the story. The U.S. election and British house prices
First thoughts. Should Bernie or trump win, what do you think would happen to the price of UK house prices. Maybe some capital flight to London per chance ?

In the state's eyes, smoking and homebuying are equally vicious
I was looking at Zoopla further to another thread, and this produced the datum that the average house in my road is worth £1.2 million. The stamp duty a buyer would pay to own such an average house would be £64,000. Stamp duty is levied on the transaction, and the other costs of a property transaction are pretty low.…

Zoopla
Does anyone know much about Zoopla and how they work out their house prices. They seem to go down by a load sometimes abilitarily when every other price indicator is saying otherwise ?

Deutsche Bank 8x Lehman shock
http://www.theguardian.com/business/deutschebank Looking back at the Lehman Brothers collapse of 2008, it’s amazing how quickly it all happened. In hindsight there were a few early-warning signs, but the true scale of the disaster publicly unfolded only in the final moments before it became apparent that Lehman was doomed.…

Bank Of England insider trading
The title is designed to be leading. But I came across a blog which has the following to say. I'm just wondering if anyone has more info, or knows a bit more about pension funds and could say if this is actually quite unusual. It does seem odd to me that most other funds lost money during the GFC while BoE made by moving…
