Credit Reference Agencies - Why so difficult?
Hi Folks, I recently finished handling my late mothers estate. I have one open task around notifying credit reference agencies Is it just me, or is this unduely vauge in what to do? Does the fact I used Tell Us Once, told banks etc, make any difference? And being more pragmatic, is it actually necessary at all? When I look…

Error on IHT400 Form box 79
Has anyone else noticed that for box 79 on the IHT400 PDF form (version : HMRC 12/25) the automation does not calculate the addition of box 77 and 78 correctly - and a manual value cannot be entered. It's using a string concatenation (joining both the value fields as a long string) rather than doing a numeric addition.

Money Moral Dilemma: What should I do with the inherited money that I feel guilty about spending?
This week's MoneySaver who wants advice asks.. I've recently inherited some money. It's enough to buy a new car, something I do need. But I feel too guilty to spend it - I would much rather have the person I inherited it from still here, and it breaks my heart even thinking about spending it, as doing so would almost feel…

Plan after death for those without family
Hi. Sorry to be morbid, but I am on my way to 50 and been thinking about what I should do regarding my will etc. I have no children and no family left, so do not know where to start. I guess I would like to leave my house etc. to a good cause, it is horrible to think all of my stuff will just be sold or thrown away. It is…

Still being charged by British Gas
Hi gang, Dealing with nans estate and property as executor, I settled her last bill with BG, closed her account, and shut off the power at the fuse box. Then started getting letters from BG sent to her house addressed to "the occupiers" (notably not addressed to myself or sent to my house as executor which they were doing)…

Some confusion with Solicitor advice
Asking for a friend, so possible that I am not aware of all the facts, but will detail the situation as I understand it. A daughter is joint executor with a solicitor of her Mothers estate. Probate is all in place. Her Sister is estranged from the family, and her and her family have only been left with minor bequests. The…

Gifted Property Contents
Hi All, We were gifted a property by a living relative in early 2024. We moved into the property last year. The property is completely furnished, but there is no evidence (written or otherwise) to confirm that the contents were included in the gift. Verbally, this had been confirmed on numerous occasions, but there is no…

Marriage and future IHT
Hi all Now I've got Probate, I'm planning ahead, with my partner, how best to manage the assets. We're fully aware that getting married (and amending our wills and getting LPOAs) is the most important thing we need to do. We'll be doing this to protect ourselves, my adult niece and nephew and my partner's two adult…

IHT on gifts - can exemption be carried forward from 8 yrs ago to 7 yrs ago?
EDIT: Title edited to make clear I'm not talking about carrying forward for more than one year. So gifts made each year can be shielded from inheritance tax using the £3,000 annual exemption. If it isn't all used, the unused portion of the annual exemption can be carried forward for one year. Suppose I made a gift of…

Co-Op mismanaging estate?
Hi Everybody, Sorry, this post turned out to be quite long. My mother recently passed away, and the probate/estate was handled by Coop. I was against using Coop because I didn’t trust them after hearing the sales pitch, but my sister was keen to use them and agreed to pay their fees, so I agreed on this condition (which I…

Probate House Value versus Estate Agent Market Price
Hi all. Probate has now been granted on the estate I am the executor for, so I'm now in the process of selling the properties. I had professional RICS valuations done on both properties that need to be sold, but we had an estate agent round (Known to the family) and wants to market one of the houses for £175K more than the…

Inheritance tax general question
I listened to Martin’s recent podcast about inheritance tax and have a quick question for all you experts! If a partner (married, civil partnership, or partner) dies but they are joint tenants, does the property come under their estate or is it discounted from the estate? Hope this makes sense and thanks in advance!

1975 Inheritance Act - No win no fee
I am writing to you to raise a serious concern about the operation of the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975 and the unintended consequences it can have for families administering estates .My siblings and I are currently executors and beneficiaries of our late father’s estate. We are responsible for…

PoA on death - what I've learned
Dealing with my late mother's estate as executor I discovered a couple of things I wasn't aware of before in respect of the PoA's that I held to act on her behalf. First, the government's 'Tell Us Once' service does not include the Office of the Public Guardian - you have to notify them separately. Secondly, when you do…

Reporting change to value of estate
If a further bank account is found for a deceased after HMRC has provided the executor the unique code, but before the application for a grant of probate, how should the executor deal with the probate application? It is a relatively small sum (say £900 approx) and there is no IHT payable at on the estate. HMRC say do not…

Disabled Children's Trust
My 14 son who is autistic inherited £75k from my Uncle in his will. The solicitor handling the probate said that as he was a minor, they would put the monies into a bare trust, although the will did not stipulate anything of this nature. I stated that as he was disabled, it would be good if this were placed into a disabled…
