Can I rescue these mouldy sultanas?
Bought a very large packet of sultanas & transferred them into a lidded polythene container because the bag split. Now find they seem to have gone a bit mouldy. Can I rescue them? Would thoroughly washing them and drying them in the oven make them safe to eat? I was wondering whether I could soak them briefly in a Campden…

Hello to all the lovely old stylers I am trying to organise a batch buying/cooking weekend as getting sick of takeaways when tired after a long day at work and thought I would set aside a weekend to do this My question is about marinating meat. I wondered if it was possible to buy meat and chicken, marinate it in…

Calories in Tesco "High Juice"
Tesco High Juice Apple, and Tesco High Juice Pineapple. Firstly let's do some maths. I drink a lot of the stuff - 1 bottle only lasts me around 3 days, and that's making it very weak. A 1L bottle of this stuff has - get this - 1,700 kcal!!! Working out to an extra 600kcal on to my diet, every day, for the sake of having…

What are good investments for a "Great Depression"?
Imagine you lived in 1925 and knew the Great Depression was coming. What would you buy as investments? Now imagine you live in 2012 (difficult I know) and believe another large scale depression is overdue. What do you buy as investments?

Quorn mince & Chicken Breasts (real ones)
Has anyone ever mixed these? I need to make a Lasagne to use some OOD sauces - so have some Quorn mince I can do that with. However, I (stupidly) got some chicken breasts out the freezer yesterday so really need to use these today as well. Would they "go" OK with the Quorn mince in the Lasagne? Otherwise, any other…

Christmassy one-pot type entertaining? Inspiration needed please!
I'm feeding 8 people for a pre-Christmas get-together on Christmas Eve. I suspect it's probably more economical to give them a one-pot type hot meal than lots of snacks, although I'm not sure which I'm going to do yet. We have mainly meat-eaters with a couple of vegetarians, and I wouldn't mind doing a separate meat and…

Help needed in finding Christmas Cake Recipe...
It's a Family Circle (UK edition) recipe circa 2002 - 2004, possibly an October/November edition as it was freeze-able. Possibly in the "Get Ahead" section. The name was something like double choc ring cake. It was a ring cake, a pecan should be popped into each indentation of the tin before cooking, so when turning out…

Help me make my Bread better!

Food Mixer - Cake Making Question
Hello, I have a new mixer :j (Kenwood Prospero), and have used it to make a couple of cakes so far. When some recipes call for folding in the flour, I was just wondering if you could just turn the power on the mixer down to a lower setting and spoon in the flour, using the beater at a lower speed to 'fold' in? I'm trying…

Decent easy recipe for tomato based sauce suggestions
I'm watching the pennies and in the past have usually bought Dolmio/Ragu type sauces from the supermarket which can cost up to £1.60p+ (unless on offer) . I have a fussy eater who doesn't like lumps of tomato in his bolognese sauce too. I've tried to make my own sauce using tinned chopped tomatoes but it never tastes the…

How far OOD?
Been having a clear out of the cupboards as conscious that there's a fair few sauce jars in there that have been lingering for a while. As suspected there are quite a few that are OOD - bit  at myself as promised I wouldn't do this again but I've been in hospital / unwell and am now on a very restricted diet so, as…

ideas for mini pie fillings especially veggie
Ok thinking of making a selection of mini pies (done in a muffin tin so about the size of an American "deep" muffin) and freeze then ready for over the Christmas season. I was thinking slow braised beef, some kind of chicken and veg and some sweet like apple. Then I run out of ideas. I would like some veggie ones if…

Can I cook pastry in sillicone?
I recently watched a programme where they made mini pies by cooking them in deep muffin tins-in that case they cooked down some beef till it broke apart, with some veg and sauce mmmmmm. I had been looking to buy a metal muffin tin for this, but then remembered I cook muffins in my sillicone muffin trays. But I have never…
