Can I rescue these mouldy sultanas?

Bought a very large packet of sultanas & transferred them into a lidded polythene container because the bag split. Now find they seem to have gone a bit mouldy. Can I rescue them? Would thoroughly washing them and drying them in the oven make them safe to eat? I was wondering whether I could soak them briefly in a Campden solution which is used for sterilising wine equipment? Any ideas?

I would throw them, and I don't say that about many things.

Anybody know if they would be ok for birds to eat? Would be a shame for them to go to waste totally.

The birds wouldn't eat them either.

At best you might get a rat to eat them
  • I have eaten a lot of foods that are OOD and past their best (and have lived to tell the tale),but I would never eat mouldy dried fruit!

    Bin it please.

  • Sorry, I don't believe in raisin your hopes either. Even if they're not currantly past their sell-by date I wouldn't give a fig for them either.
  • Chuck them away anything thats growing mould on it isn't worth the risk, although as a child growing up with rationing we often ate jam that had got a bit 'hairy' just scraped it of and ate underneath ,also cheese,we just cut of the mouldy bits and I'm alive and kicking 68 years later:):) it was necessity in those days that you weren't as fussy and replacing the items were difficult but hey a packet of sultanas in Tescos is only 84p, food poisoning would cost a lot more in distress alone

The time spent would not be worth it especially for 84 pence. Maybe for a block of cheese worth a few pounds but sultanas..they are too cheap. They are on 3 for 2 at Tesco if you wanted to try restocking them.

:p Regular savers earn 6% interest (HSBC, First Direct, M&S) :p Loans cost 2.9% per year (Nationwide) = FREE money. :p
