Getting coloured clothes bright again?
Hi all, After just 3 weeks back at school one of my son's brand new yellow polo shirts has gone grey. I can't work out why because the other one (done in the same wash) is fine - the only difference was that the grey one had stain remover on it! Any idea on how to get it nice and bright again? Can I use something like…

Cleaning a kitchen sink's overflow drain
Dear lovely MSErs, Please help! We have disgusting gunk coming out of our kitchen sink's overflow drain (the area where the water runs out if you leave the tap running to long to prevent the water from flowing on to the floor). Anyone have any OS ideas on how to clean this and to remove the orange/black gunk that sits at…

Post Office Insurance: Worth it?
Hello! The screen on my phone recently cracked and I need to send it off to my insurance company. I went in to ask for a padded envelope today and the cashier asked whether I'd like insurance when I send it off. Is this really necessary? I sort of assumed that as I was paying for a service they had to take due care and be…

Making your own sweets?
Do any of you old-stylers make your own confectionery? I mean things like humbugs, candy canes etc as well as fudge and truffles and other more common ones. I have ordered a book on how to make confectionary for a friend and would like to get her some bits to go with it to make up a sort of kit, particularly if there is…

Can people share with me what they put in their car box?
I use the family car so would like to be prepared for the winter. I really don't travel that far from home so if the car just completely wouldn't start or got stuck then I probably could abandon it and phone family or friends for a lift, get a bus to home or even walk with the pushchair. So far I have/know I need to get;…

Washing Winter Coat
I'm not sure this is the right place to put this post so apologises if its wrong. I've got a long-loved black, winter coat that's a bit worse for wear, its wool and in need of a good clean. I am unsure about putting it in the washing machine, but don't want to fork out for a dry cleaners if I can aviod it :) It also has…

Cheapest way to buy chicken
Hiya We use quite a bit of chicken as this is the main meat my husband likes and as our daughter (11 months old) has milk protein intolerance she basically has a meat potato and veg diet :D I am finding it difficult on a strict budget and was wondering what the cheapest way to buy chicken is? We dont have a butchers nearby…

Having fun for free - or just about free...
There's a lot of very genuine distress about at the moment - people struggling on impossibly low budgets, people having to go on anti-Ds, & around here there's a strong feeling of silent misery & people papering over the cracks hard & fast. I know that depression's a horrible condition which makes it impossible to see even…

Depression, Money Saving and it all becoming a bit too much!
Yesterday I was diagnosed with Depression and went back onto the anti-depressants that I had managed to wean myself off over 2 months ago. Having depression has come as a bit of a shock as I have been in denial for the last 6 years. Even though I have been on anti-depressants for the last 12 years due to a breakdown…

Curry
Last night we decided to have a treat and went to the takeaway, cost a fortune! I've decided I need to learn to cook curry from scratch and what better place to ask for recipes than on the oldstyle board? We are basically meat eaters in this house and trying to get a chickpea or lentil past my kids lips is a huge ordeal.…

Using a cracked egg
I'd really appreciate some advice on what is safe with a cracked egg. I bought a box of eggs, checked them in the shop and they were all fine. When I got home, I forgot to lift the carrier bags off the back of the pushchair before I lifted my daughter out - the pushchair fell backwards, squashing my shopping  Straight…

Can I boil water on my stove?
I know this is a really stupid question, but last year turning the hot tap on in our house cost us a fortune. It's a three storey house and the kitchen is downstairs next to our 'den' which has a multifuel burner. I'm thinking of boiling water for my washing up (and fill some flasks for the day); I want to get a kettle to…

To eat, or not to eat...
Have just gone in the fridge and found two out-of-date packs of back bacon. They're both in the airtight, vacuum type of packaging, the first says the 4th of September, the other says the 18th of September. I've just cut open the first, all smells good, do I chance it or bin it? I know what my answer would be for the…

Using dehydrated food
I dehydrated a huge pile of rhubarb a few weeks ago and was amazed how a pile that covered the draining board only half filled a ziplock bag. Now my amazement is under control I realise I have no idea how much to rehdrate when I want to use it. Anyone have any idea how much dried weight reflects the original fresh weight?
