Can people share with me what they put in their car box?

Options
I use the family car so would like to be prepared for the winter. I really don't travel that far from home so if the car just completely wouldn't start or got stuck then I probably could abandon it and phone family or friends for a lift, get a bus to home or even walk with the pushchair.

So far I have/know I need to get;

Fleece blanket
2 x massive tins of de-icer (one for house & car)
2 x Ice scraper
Bottles of water/cereal bars for the children
Torch
Spreading a little Christmas joy all year round :santa2:

If you have littlies I would consider a little plastic sledge if it's snow you are concerned with, pushing a pushchair is usually a nightmare but pulling is far easier and much more fun :D
  • I would include a folding shovel and more than one fleece blanket or like we have done a very heavy hand crocheted one.
Extra gloves in case yours get soaked.
A pair of wellies - you can't dig a car out in stilettos
Phone charger that you plug into the car
A flask full of hot chocolate or the instant cup ones with a car travel kettle and a big bottle or two of water.
I wholeheartedly go along with chocolate animated-smileys-eating-drinking-090.gif

  • I also have a fleece hat and a bottle of screenwash.
They'll ask me how I got her I'll say

    I've been Money Tipped!
    ROPE.

i spent the bad winter where i was hauling people out of ditches and none of them had any rope. A good long length of rope ( longer than you might normally tow on!) that hitches easily to your car and with a loop or quick hitch for a tow bar on a passing four wheel drive!

I don't think a fleece blanket is warm enough personally. An old single duvet would be a better bet imo.
  • As well as all of those, I have a few tea light candles and a box of matches in a waterproof bag. I was told that having a couple of those lit will just keep the temperature above zero, and stop the interior freezing up.

Might be rubbish, but it doesn't take up much space.

spare hat, gloves and scarf for everyone, sleeping bags will be going in if the weather gets really bad, cereal bars, water, nuts and toffees! Snow boots for OH and I, torch.

Will add rope and poss shovel if we go on longer journey. My main concern is having to abandon car on way home from work and walk back as our town is at the top of a hill and getting in gets tricky - now I am driving myself rather than getting a lift with OH I'm more likely to just leave the car and trek so warm clothes/ footwear are my priority.

Since we spend a certain amount of time going to Norfolk and Suffolk we take a special hammer that has a seat belt cutter recessed into the handle. Lives in the front of the car. Gods forbid we should end up in a watery ditch  but just in case we need to hack our way out, it goes with us. And a couple of those silver space blankets.

If you're going to get out of the car and walk get yourself a Hi Glow jacket, or at the very least a vest or armbands from the £shop. Be seen Be safe.
