I really don't travel that far from home so if the car just completely wouldn't start or got stuck then I probably could abandon it and phone family or friends for a lift, get a bus to home.

I'm the same apart from no children to think of. We don't live in the middle of no where either.

So I've got a can of de-icer, which stays in the car all year round as I never ever get around to taking it out. :D A Scraper and thats it. I do go out suitably dressed for the weather, mind, and don't use the car as a coat.

Maybe I'll get caught out but I really honestly, (in my situation) can't see the need to buy anything else.
  • A piece of old carpet to put under the wheels if you get stuck in snow and an old towel or cloth for cleaning your lights, especially when they get all salted up!
I keep an old pair of gloves and a couple of old car mats under the flap for the spare wheel so I could change a wheel without getting my knees and hands filthy!

De-icer, screenwash, scraper, water for car etc etc.
    Blanket
    Thick jumper
    First aid kit
    Fold-up snow shovel
    Wind-up torch
    Cereal bars
    Water for drinking
    Yaktrax
Some salt solution stuff that you sprinkle on ground in front of tyres to give you more grip (not sure if it works, but I was given it)
Some old towels and black bags (not sure why!)

I wish my car had a cigarette lighter socket so that I could charge my phone and boil water.

I live in a rural area so always have hat/gloves/boots with me in winter and a fully charged phone.

Lots of my friends take the p*** out of my because of what I carry round. They live in more urban areas and think they are protected because of that. A few winters back four of them got caught out and had to walk home as public transport wasn't running. From the sound of it they could have got moving if they had had some supplies. I admit I was amused!

I'd add a small brush (like the ones that comes with a dustpan), to brush off any snow before scraping. My ice scraper has a waterproof mitten attached (from £ shop), which means I can scrape in some sort of comfort.

You might want to consider snow/ice grips for your shoes as well. If you search the website named after a rainforest ;), they don't cost a lot, and you just pop them on your shoes/wellies. Saved me a lot of bother last winter :) *Disclaimer: does not work with heels :rotfl:

My neighbour had to walk home from work in a blizzard in a suit jacket and high heels for want of chucking a few things in the car

It's a bit like that party game.....

During the winter inside my car boot I carry:

    a folding shovel
    a survival blanket
    emergency chocolate and cereal bars
dry hat, socks & gloves in a zip-lock bag
    spare fleece
    wellies
    ice-scraper
    de-icer
    old blanket
    wind-up torch

plus I always carry the following:

hi-vis waistcoat (for any emergency situation)
    ski jacket (allotment use)
    waterproof jacket & trousers (ditto)
    wellies (ditto)
    LED torch (ditto)
    water (ditto)

For information, I live in Blackpool and drive an Alfa Romeo 3-door hatchback around town only, but the winter kit has come in handy a few times! DH also carries the same kit around in his car for journeys across the UK.

I think avoiding journeys where possible in bad weather is a good rule, and certainly one I'll be applying. But, I will still have a few supplies in the car, just in case. Last year we were at inlaws for Sunday lunch when the snow set in. We set off home straight away, as it was coming down thick and fast. Wasn't too bad a journey, but had we packed spare bits and bobs, we could have risked staying longer, which might have ended up overnight.

So: for us, nappies and pjs for the tots, blankets, their cups, some salt for grip, de icer, scraper, spare hats and gloves for all

My heels I leave in my locker at work, and change into sensible footwear before leaving.

Oh, and keep an eye on those oh-so-reliable weather forecasts :D

I like yours! I carry a lot of stuff like that too.
2 coats is good, a normal one and a waterproof to go over it. Also a fleece to go under them even though I'd be wearing warm stuff anyway.

Also I'll have small tines with ring-pulls. Rice pud, fruit, and Heinz spaghetti (not tasty I know but it has energy so does the job).
I just realised I have sleeping bags in the loft so I'll chuck one in the car.
