Virtually free Heating!!
Having recently discovered to my horror that my gas bill has just gone up 69% when my fixed deal came to an end, have been thinking laterally about how to keep my old cold house warm. I've been lighting lots of cheap candles in the lounge on an evening - it looks nice and cheerful, and they give off a surprising amount of…

I usually use the base of my pressure cooker to make jam in, but I was just in charity shop and they had an old fashioned jam pan for £5. What are the benefits of using a jam pan and are they worth £5? (pan will probably be gone if I go back tomorrow, but if it's not is it worth buying?)

Uses for an old cotton shirt
I rescued an old shirt of DH's that he was going to throw away (not at all in the spirit of OS I know!) but am a bit stumped what I could do with it, despite my telling him off that I could use it for so many things and it would be madness to throw away! I don't have a sewing machine at the moment so am a bit limited when…

What can I do with sticky rice?
I bought some Sainsburys Basics long grain rice which I cooked tonight for the first time. Big mistake. It wasn't parboiled so although it was cooked it is very sticky. Although edible we didn't fancy it with our chicken curry (didn't fancy a dinner as we have had two for the last two nights), so ended up having it as a…

Cure for stinky wool please
I've just got a mountain of knitting wool from freecycle, from a very kind lady. Problem is it stinks of cigarette smoke! :o There is some that I will wash, but most of it is still in balls - some 100grams. All in all there is about 50 balls of yarn, really super stuff. Does anyone have any ideas other than washing it?
