Uses for an old cotton shirt

I rescued an old shirt of DH's that he was going to throw away (not at all in the spirit of OS I know!) but am a bit stumped what I could do with it, despite my telling him off that I could use it for so many things and it would be madness to throw away!

I don't have a sewing machine at the moment so am a bit limited when it comes to making anything fancy, but surely there is something I can do with it?

It's a bit too grotty to give to a charity shop (no amount of white vinegar/bicarb can get it looking new again).

Sometimes the infant school takes shirts for painting overalls for the children?
  • I tend to chop old shirts into rags and then I chuck the small fiddly bits on the compost heap if they are cotton.
  • I was thinking dusters or wipes? Re-usable cloths or hem the edges into handerchiefs?

Make sure you remove and save all the buttons first if you are turning it into rags!

If your other half is -ahem- larger than you, they make great overalls for cleaning and cooking in. They cover you better than an apron!
  • Shorten the sleeves ( you can stich them up by hand ) and wear it to bed with shorts or leggings if its cold .
  • One of the best things for cleaning & polishing shiny surfaces, like glass (windows!!), chrome (taps) stainless steel etc.

My nanna used to cut them up, so they became an apron. She'd cut the top half off, the fronts and some of the sleeves - use those bits for rags, and use the remainder of the sleeves and back of the shirt as an apron.
Proud to be dealing with my debts :T

If the fabric is in good nick, dye it and use as a "night dress", with or without additional trims?
If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing
