Olive oil a Trans Fat?
If this is the wrong place to post this then please move it elsewhere. My husband heard from a friend that when you heat up olive oil its properties change and it becomes what the Americans refer to as Trans fats - We call them Hydrogenated vegetable oils. These are really bad for us and Sainsbury's have pledged to remove…

What to do with celeriac?
I've bought a small celeriac to try from Tesco. Was thinking of mashing it up with potatoes tonight, only thing is I'm not sure what to do with it! Is it just like a potato, do I need to peel it? or just chop it up as is? It's an ugly looking vegetable that's for sure! Cheers for any help :o

faux fur coat fastenings
i have just bought a fun fur coat in half price sale at la redoute. the coat is beautiful and cosy looking. only problem is the fastenings are these hooks that slip through a ring and then fold back on themselves and click into place. now unfirtunately the fastening once clicked shut (bit like a watch strap link closure)…

Valentine flowers and making your own gifts
My lovely DH sent me a bouquet of flowers this morning for our wedding anniversary :j . As I unwrapped the flowers, I realised that the lovely crepe and shiny paper they were wrapped in could be saved and kept for packaging home made (or bought) presents for birthdays and even for Christmas if you can keep it that long. So…

Non-Alcoholic Cocktail recipes??
Tonight DS has to make an 'item of food' for Beavers to get his next badge. He wants to make a non-alcoholic punch. I'm taking part in the not going to supermarket for a month and forgot to get something whilst out. Can I create some sort of punch from the ingrediants I have in, which are 1 bottle orange squash 1/3 bottle…

Os Diary For Thursday, 8th February.
Hi, this is the Daily Thread for Thursday, 8th Feb 2007. This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything OS and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome,…

Dry red wine
We bought a 30 litre box of van plonk in France last year expecting it to be as good as the previous years wine, but it's so dry it's hardly drinkable. Can anything be done to sweeten it a bit?

Focaccia bread
It is like pizza (dough base), starts with an F and yet has no red sauce stuff on it, has cheese on top and peppers. I think it might be Greek. Any ideas what it might be? I bought some the other day and I would like to make some myself if I could remember the name. Any ideas? I know it is called Foccacia thanks to…

Toffee sauce
A while ago I noticed Asda selling some kids snack packs consisting of apple slices and a toffee dipping sauce. It seems like a good idea for reluctant fruit eaters. Anyone got a copycat recipe for the dipping sauce? I was thinking along the lines of brown sugar, butter and evaporated milk, but I'm not very confidant about…

Moulinex Masterchef 20: how to switch on?
I acquired a Moulinex food processor at the weekend. No instructions but otherwise very complete. I cannot get it to go. There is a button at the top left back which looks like an on/off control but it does not budge. I suspect it is prevented from working by a safety cut off device. Does anybody know what I have to do to…

Grey laundry back to white - I've done it! (pure OS)
I've been trying to find a way to bring faded grey, unsightly, cotton underwear back to white. The batch I wanted to fix are all white with coloured patterns. The next plan is to tackle dh's pale pink underwear which is meant to be white! The tips on the mega index thread seem to suggest soda crystals (which I put in my…

Smelly Shoe cupboard
Hello We have just moved into a new house which has a really useful understairs cupboard which fits all our shoes and boots and we can hand all of our coats up too. Trouble is, shoes/boots/trainers for five people can pong a bit, which is rather embarassuing when we offer use of the cupboard to visitors! Before I get used…

Swimming with dyed hair......
I had my hair dyed last nite, bright red on top and black underneath. I am going swimming 2nite and am slightly worried about it either making my hair a funny colour or me dying the pool black! I have a swimming cap which isnt completely watertight, is there anything you suggest putting onto my hair before braving the…

Magnetic window cleaners - any good?
I had originally posted this in quick questions, but got no response. I've also looked in the indexed collections but couldn't see anything relevant. I've sacked the window cleaner- at £8 every 4 weeks (even in winter!) Its too expensive for little reward. I have a 3 storey house (no he didn't do all the windows either!)…

Something odd in the freezer........
................do you have any items in your freezer that you just don't know what to do with? Mine's rammed at the moment and I am trying to empty it - but one thing that has been there for ages is a lump of Tempeh. I bought this last year while on a health kick and it has been in the freezer for ages.:o I've never…
