Bought car, not as described and found receipts for work are fake.
Hi, I am new to the forum and have registered as desperate for advice. I bought a car last week only to find it not as described when I got it home. I paid good money for the car and the reason I wanted it was because of the internal engine work and other tuning work it had done. Firstly I noticed items on the receipts…

Corsa pedal test not working.
I wonder if anyone could help me by pointing out where I'm going wrong with the 'pedal test' to give the fault codes on my Corsa. It's a 1.3 CDTI from 2004. The engine management light is coming on now and again and I'd like to identify the problem but I can't get the 'pedal test' to work. Engine off, brake and accelerator…

Had accident - insurance company have got fraud company to contact me
Had a small bump in a car park two weeks ago. No damage to my car but a slight bump on the other car. Gave the other driver my number, they called that evening to get the insurance details. They then said they'd call me if they were going to bother claiming - they never did. Anyway, totally forgot about it (yeh, my fault).…

Would you buy a car with a short MOT?
My OH and I are in desperate need of a car and we've seen one in the village we live in. It's a Golf GTI and is selling at £700. I got in contact with the guy who was selling it and asked about MOT, tax etc. The MOT runs out at the end of September and it has no tax (the tax thing is okay because we can tax it ourselves…

My first experience with Evans Halshaw
Instead of giving you the whole story, here's the letter I just emailed to Evans Halshaw Customer Care (sorry about the poor formatting - I cut and pasted it from email)... Dear Customer Care Sadly I have had to resort to sending an email to you as it is obvious that you do not respond very well to messages left on the…

valuetyres.co.uk still trading?
Does anyone know if they are still trading. I ordered a tyre from them a few weeks ago, slightly the wrong tyre has turned up. I've tried calling them using the number on their site and get 'number not recognised', both of their e-mail addresses bounce and their web chat is off-line. All looks a bit ominous. Anyone else…

Would running a motorcycle be cheaper than using the train?
I know this is a bit of a vague question but wondered if anyone who knows anything about motorbikes can offer any advice. I'm due to start a course in September which requires me to travel to London four days a week. The cheapest I can price it on the trains is a weekly ticket for £109. It looks a fairly simple drive of…

selling a car - accepting paypal?
Hi We're selling our car on auto trader and someone has offered to buy it (without seeing it first) and want to pay by paypal. I'm very suspicious - why would anyone want to but without seeing it first? I know that you shouldn't accept paypal for eBay car purchases. Am I being paranoid? Thanks T

Hi, Just wanting a bit of advice. Just nipped out in car with my boyfriend - he was driving and a lady hit us in the rear bumper whilst we were stopped waiting to go at a round-a-bout. Nothing major it just appears to be a cracked number plate on boyfriends car, bumper isn't marked and nothing on her car. We exchanged…

Garage Rip Off?
I just had my MOT and my Suzuki Alto failed because "both front constant velocity joint gaiters insecurely mounted to housing". The charge for the repair was £133 at my local Halfords garage. Never owned a car - need one now!
Hi - apologies if I make any newbie errors here! I am in need of some very basic advice. I passed my test at 18 and now, in my (ahem) mid 40s, I am finally going to have to get me a car, having never owned or been insured for one before. I cannot afford to buy outright and have received a few pearls of wisdom as to how I…

Car Insurance Settlement for a "Right-Off" - Advice Please
I was recently hit by another car and claimed with my insurer (Admiral) for the damage. As the car is 10 years old they have decided that it is uneconomical to repair (despite only bodywork damage). They've informed me of a settlement they believe the car is worth and insisted that they will not pay anymore. I feel as…

Tamper-proof Tax Disc Holder - MSE Style
I've just renewed my car tax or Vehicle Excise Duty. I also got myself one of those tamper-proof tax disc holders. Basically, these make the disc useless for forging, by sticking to the front and back of the disc, so the printed top layer of paper comes off with the plastic cover, if you remove it. A useful product, and no…

Anyone know any good dealers in SE London that buy used cars from the public?
I want to sell my 2005 Ford Focus but have failed to be able to sell it privately and the websites that guarantee to buy your car are quoting ridiculously low prices (ie too low to make it worth selling). I did approach a local-ish dealer but was told that my car was not suitable 'for requirements' although they didn't say…

Best Value for 80-Mile Daily Journey?
Any recommendations for combining something that will give me about 20,000 miles per year with reliability and a relatively low cost? Having ditched our second car few years ago, we'll now need another one, but want to minimise outgoings. I was thinking of maybe a Focus diesel of 20-30k miles for about £8k or maybe up to…
