Having no car....
Sigh. I've had a car of some description ever since I passed my test 14 years ago. Have just paid off the outstanding finance on our current car (borrowed money from family) as we simply can no longer afford to pay for it now that my wife is not working. So once the car is sold, we'll have to see how we manage without a…

Hi, I'm organising a trip for 9 people from Chesterfield to London and I am eyeing up the cheap 1st class tickets on East Midlands Trains. I've worked out that for £2pp extra each way, we can travel in 1st class. I know it is worth it for the extra leg room alone, as we will then be travelling onwards on Eurostar [sadly in…

Advice needed on low cost (mostly) motorway driving
Hi I need some advice on what car (probably second hand) to buy. My priorities are: MOST IMPORTANT: 1. Low *overall* cost motoring 2. QUIET & comfortable with good ride on motorways (long journeys & making phone calls from car) 3. Good-ish acceleration (for safe overtaking). (0-60 in c.8 or 9 secs max) DESIRABLE: 4.…

Stopping on the hard shoulder
I've seen two people in the last two days on the hard shoulder of the A1M to allow their young children have a wee! In one case there was a service station about 2 miles further along the motorway. Has the law changed to allow you to stop for toilet breaks or is it still only for emergency use, ie when you've broken down?…

Save a few quid on Monthly season tickets...
I haven't tested this out personally, but my Dad assures me it saved him a few quid over the years commuting to London. If you buy a monthly ticket for say £300/month and you want it to start on say Monday 9th May then it will expire on Wednesday 8 June. Now pro-rata this will cost £10/day, but you can add an extra 2 days…

Kia Picanto problem.
I recently bought an 05 Kia Picanto 1.1. I have driven around 200 miles with no problem, however I had to accelerate fast for about 4 seconds & after that the 'Engine' light lit up on the dash. The engine seemed to lose some power & once I got home it was running lumpy, almost as if it was running on 3 cylinders & the…

Can Police disobey traffic signs at all times?
I know that when an emergency vehicle is answering a call they can disobey traffic laws/signs. There is a local magistrate court…

When to go through Red Traffic Lights?
From my knowledge on reading posts here and from highway code etc.... We all should know that under no circumstances should we go through a red traffic light. Even if we have the fire brigade or ambulance behind us. They should wait patiently till the lights change and we can move out of the way safely. They should not…
