Hi,

I'm thinking of buying an audi a6 2.7 tdi with 125k miles on the clock. its only 3 years old. I've been told audi engines are good up to atleast 250k so I was wondering what are the most common faults that could be on this car? All the miles are motorway as it was an ex company car and its going to be purchased from auction. So yeah any common faults or anything I should look out for on this particular car? - because its a company car it will have been maintained for and any repairs etc will have been carried out no matter cost by maintenance company right? Such as new timing chain, cv joints turbo if needed etc?

Thanks.

    Check the service record and make sure it's never missed a service. It should've been serviced every X,000 miles WITHOUT FAIL, NOT JUST EVERY YEAR.

    There should be a full list of everything it's had.

    Don't pay too much for it on the premise that it'll "be good for 250k" - it's still a high mileage ex company hack.

    If it's an automatic front wheel drive model then steer clear. The multitronic gearboxes have lots of problems.

    I have had a couple of DSG models Audi/Vw etc they can have a problem with the gearing but it is fixable under warranty if it's been spotted, the best way I can describe it is it hangs before going back when in reverse.

    Ah no I'm not looking for any of that fancy rubbish. It's just an old fashioned manual gearbox

    3 yr old Audi will be a DSG bix i would have thought. The only VAG car with the old multitronic box now is the Seat Exeo.

    I have heard rumours that the 2.7 is not the cheapest to run and not thought to be that reliable. Always been tempted as it is a powerful engine and also economical. With a DSG box it seems a good deal, especially as the Lemans special edition seems to normally come with the 2.7 engine.

    But i would stick to a 2.0, you can remap to almost the same performance if you really felt the need, but more importantly.the 2.0 has a better reputation for longevity.

    125k is nothing for an Audi that has probably spent ita first three years on the motorway.

    It should go for around 8-8.5k absolute max

    @bigjl

    I've found that actually the 2.0L cant be got in the le mans edition and they work out costing more and I don't have that much (15k) to spend. Apparently the 2.7 is the exact same as the 3.0 but with the cylinders not bored as much and no quattro hence the less literage. Audi thinks it will do 30MPG around town which is good enough for me. I can also get the 2.7 remapped and it will give an extra 4-5 MPG. I wanted the le mans because of the extras such as lighting pack, audi 10 speaker system, 19" rs4 rims, heated seats and the bad !!! styling.

    I've heard that those 19" rims and sports suspension make for a very hard ride in town.

    Check out the cost of tyres as well.

    I'd avoid Pirelli's to be honest.

    Stick Goodyears, Contis or Michelins on.
