Grandchildren at Xmas
Just wanted opinions really. Do you make an effort to see or speak to your Grandchildren at Xmas? A little background: My in laws live in the same town as us and are around a 10 min drive away. They have never been actively involved with our kids, they've never had them for tea, taken them out, had them overnight or even…

Not 'doing' Santa - part two
I thought, seeing as the other thread was so hotly debated, people might be interested in how Christmas without Santa worked for us? My DD is 3.5. We have told her Father Christmas is a story, that he is not real but people like to dress up as him. So this year we did her what we called a Santa Sack, but she knew the…

DIY present for a lady?
I was wondering if a woman could appreciate a gesture made by his man hands, time and effort? Would it EVER be appreciated as much as an expensive labeled gift?

Smoke alarm going off in empty house
Hi Looking for some advice. The house next to me is empty and is owned by a housing agency which has seemed to disappear. Their office is now closed down and we cannot locate a telephone number. There is what sounds like a smoke alarm going off and has been for over 2 hours. This happened the other week but stopped after…

Family member ignoring HMRC
Not sure what to do about my mother in law. She was widowed a few years back and for the first time in her life has personal money (death in service, spouse's pension etc). In total it is a reasonable amount but <£50K. She is under pension age and so this is it apart from her cash in hand household help work about 4 hours…

16 Year Old Girl with an abusive mother .UPDATE
I need some advice please . My sons GF came here crying tonight , It's not the first time . Long story short she is terrified of her mothers temper, has to look after her siblings while her mum goes out drinking, and does all the cooking /cleaning while her mum posts on Facebook . I understand there's always two sides to…

Separated Parent
Sorry it's a bit cryptic. Is it a good idea for the NRP to have everything they will need at their home for their son when they visit rather than items going back and forth.

People who never say thank you?
DH has a large family. At the moment we have 2 nieces - there are another 3 due in the first half of next year. So our present budget will be sky rocketing with births, christenings, plus birthdays and Xmas. I always buy thoughtful and useful gifts. If she's lucky, they will sometimes remember DD, although she's been given…

Taking a coat back to Primark - rights?
I was given a coat for Christmas which doesn't fit. My friend gave me the receipt. I was going to take it back today to exchange for another size, but no other sizes. I then noticed she paid with a card, so I called to see if we could meet up - live half an hour apart, but she said she no longer has the card. I do…

How to stay cool when dealing with passive aggressive person?
Help! I need some good tips and tactics for keeping my cool when dealing with a passive aggressive person who is winding me up something chronic at the moment - and then when I blow my top, as I have a couple of times, they seem to think they've got the high ground (which I suppose they have) and I'm the unreasonable one…

Does it always happen in threes?
I hope not, because I dread to think what the third disaster will be! The first was my fridge/freezer giving up the ghost on christmas eve. It was about 12 years old and has never given me an ounce of trouble during its little life, but it decided to stop. When it was full of christmas stuff, ready to feed 5 people on…

How far have you made the turkey go!!
We had turkey Christmas lunch with the trimmings on Xmas day, Boxing day we had microwave version of the same. Today turkey sandwiches, and probably later turkey with pickles and bubble and squeak with the leftover veggies. I have now got some nice sliced turkey left wrapped in foil and the remainder has been made into a…

I just can't be ar$ ed to do anything!
As title states.! Had surgery (mastectomy) nearly 3 weeks ago and the pain won't quit. Had Christmas early this weekend as mum & dad flew out to NZ on Xmas day to see my little sis. It's really cheap to fly then apparently. DS2 is at his dads until 06/01 and DS1 is working(was at his gf on Xmas day). We (OH & I) went to…

Do you always show your appreciation to those close to you?
I'm always very appreciative of those who are kind to me or help me in one way or another and always make sure they know how grateful I am. BUT, I realised this morning that I don't always apply that to my OH. It's not that I take him for granted per se, it's more that I don't make the same effort to show appreciation to…

Giving Money To Parent
I'm planning to give some money to my mother to allow her to buy a house nearer to me. I have two questions. i) Is there a way that I can claim tax back on this (maybe it can be taxed at her marginal rate, which is lower) and ii) is there a way of making this amount exempt from her estate for IHT purposes? Thank you
