Advice on replacing problem window and frame
Hi All, I'm hoping for some advice on a problem window. I've recently bought a house in London. This is a 1930s era semi-detached house that has been largely renovated internally over the last 5 years by the previous owner before it was sold to me. All of the windows except one have been replaced with new double glazing.…

Outside security lights
I installed a security light over the garage door in November 2020 (Screwfix 430FH), mostly to deter people who need a wee on their way home from the pub. The previous one had failed, potentially due to being IP44, so I chose a 65 rated one. It worked great, with the ambient light sensor and PIR setting it off at just the…

Loo limescale
Hi all, I've got two toilets in my home, one of which is constantly plagued with limescale. They both get the same amount of use. Has anyone got any ideas what the difference might be between them and what I could try to sort it out? Was about to buy some of those in-cistern magnets when it occurred to me that if the water…

Cleaning porcelain tiles bathroom
The bathroom is near completion (taps need fitting to bathtub and sink, extractor fan needs fitting, ceiling to be painted, radiator to be connected). We have Matt glazed porcelain tiles for walls and floor. I used the shower last night. Condensation on the tiles dripped down and left water marks on the tiles (walls and…

Mystery electrical problem
Xmas eve I turned on a light downstairs and it didn't work. I think it flashed as I turned it off again. Half the lights on the ground floor (were the room is) now don't work. I checked the consumer unit and nothing had tripped so nothing to reset. Before I call an electrician out does anyone have any bright ideas? Thanks

Calling any Solid Wood Flooring Installation Experts - Order of laying
Hi Community. I am thinking of getting my living room floor (presently Carpet) replaced with Solid Wood Flooring in Herringbone (20mm thickness). Current state is that under the carpet is insulation and under that are the old school floorboards. Can someone advise if the following order is correct: - Remove carpet and old…

Shower not draining freely, unsure how to get access to drain.
Hi all Moved into a new (to me) house and the drain at the bottom of a shower doesn't seem to be flowing freely. I can't get my "snake" drain cleaner past the drain trap & am unsure how to get the trap out. (trap = the white plastic bit in the photo, apologies if that's the wrong name for it). It looks as if it's held in /…

Kitchen ceiling extraction unit
HiWe would like to install a ceiling flush extractor unit on top of our kitchen island. Not a big fan of drop down extractor hood which is so loud that we cant hear people talking or comes in the line of view.Normal ceiling extractors are still on the louder side for it to be effective and way too expensive. So I plan to…

Is there really much difference between A and A+ rated double glazing?
I'm looking at getting new double glazing installed and have a quote for double (or triple) glazing. I have a reasonable quote but the windows are only A rated. It's an additional £900 to upgrade all windows to triple glazing. Should I be looking for A+ windows and should I really consider triple glazing (particularly on…

Neff oven - condensate trough
My partner snapped the condensate trough on our Neff oven, it sits at the bottom of the door. What does this do and can I use the oven without it? I have done endless Google searches and I can't find much information on it. Thanks

New Window Problems
Hello forum. I paid several thousand pounds for 2 new sliding-sash bedroom windows from a local window company. Unfortunately it has been a shambles from start to finish, including the fact the windows did not seem to have been measured correctly (they had to cut the wooden lintels in order to fit them). I suspect this is…

Can I reuse these wall plugs for curtain rods?
I realize this likely is a very basic question but I could do with some advice..! I am quite nervous about drilling new holes in my walls so I want to reuse the wall plugs or at least the drilled holes from the previous owner of this home, but not sure if I can? In picture 1: Over my first set of garden doors where I want…

Urgent broken tap
New house and the leaky tap is now a touch away from breaking. Trying to get a new one ordered and fitted tomorrow. I can't find this rangemaster tap gap anywhere online. Does anyone know if a normal rangemaster tap (Range 130-230mm) could still work here? Ideally I'd replace without worktop work needed. I have until 4pm…

Slates -vs- tiles
Aside from the obvious answer of cost, is there any benefit / disadvantage to having slate over tiles? Also discounting looks too because that's all personal opinion. I'm talking actual benefits/disadvantages? Story short, house in question was built 1895-1905 timeframe. Old detached cottage and in my opinion it'd just look…

An oven bulb should be an oven bulb, no?
So our oven bulb has gone & looking for a new one. Oven isn't a fancy thing. Was in the house when we bought it & looks like they got Currys budget range I guess. Oven: Logik LBFANX12 Bulb appears to be an E14, allegedly. The cap (which i can't get off at the mo) states on the face of it "MAX 26W". So the wife jumps on the…

Kitchen tap
In the house we have moved to, the kitchen tap is a strange one. It's in 2 parts, you have the bit where the water comes from but the control is a separate lever. I want to replace it but can't find anything similar.

Where to position Venetian blinds?
We are planning on purchasing faux wood venetian blinds from Blinds2go (we have done this in previous homes, and other companies we've had quotes from were very expensive!) Two of our windows don't have a recess so we arent sure where best to place the blinds. One of the windows is 3.4m wide, so we are planning on putting…
