Loo limescale

Hi all,
I've got two toilets in my home, one of which is constantly plagued with limescale. They both get the same amount of use. Has anyone got any ideas what the difference might be between them and what I could try to sort it out?

Was about to buy some of those in-cistern magnets when it occurred to me that if the water was the problem then I'd be having the same issue in both loos! (And I'm not convinced limescale is magnetic either, but that's a science problem for another day...)

EDIT: To be clear, I'm not looking for tips on removing limescale. I'd like to not have to keep removing it, and given one toilet doesn't have the problem then it's clearly possible

  • I can't answer any of your questions, but my loo at home developed heavy lime scale after sound some research on how to clean it up with little to no chemicals... I was amazed that a 1.5 ltr bottle of the Americas "most famous soft drink" did the trick for me. Pour it in leave it as long as poss, use the brush to scrub excess bits.... flush, stand back and be amazed at the difference.... Apparently it's slightly acidic which breaks down the scale.

Same here! But just get the cheapo stuff.
I'm writing a book on plagiarism. It wasn't my idea.

One may have a smoother surface than the other so limescale is less likely to adhere.

A water softener would solve the problem but isn't cheap.

Use citric acid, cheap cola as above or a proprietary descaler such as Kilrock to remove limescale.

Magnets are snake oil and will do nothing.
A man walked into a car showroom.
He said to the salesman, “My wife would like to talk to you about the Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
Salesman said, “We haven't got a Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
The man replied, “You have now mate".
  • A few months ago, Limescale just appeared all of a sudden . Just below the rear part of the rim . Using bleach alone wouldn't shift it . I tried baking soda .
In the end, the best thing that worked , was to put a few flash wipes under the rim covering the holes . Left overnight , and repeated next night . Toilet is good as new !
