leaky roof query
Following a storm in May, we thought we had traced an internal leak to the roof. Various roofers came out and each offered their own opinion and 2 of them addressed a number of issues. The one piece of advice I did not take up, following the recommendation of most of the other roofers, was to have the roof tiles on and…

Cooker Hood Ducting Advice
Just in the throes of about to create merry mayhem with the kitchen installation firm on Monday (email sent today) and specifically the ducting from the area above the cooker hood to outside. Well it appears that the rectangular trunking turning right from above the cooker hood only goes into the cavity and is too short to…

Syphon size

Do I need to replace the syphon (which is knackered) with like for like or would a 9 inch etc work. Reason is, it seems much trickier to get hold of 11 inch compared to…

Upstairs ceiling on house
Hi, Looking at buying a house that was a bungalow but converted to a 2 storey house 15 years ago. Not sure details as to why but the ceiling height upstairs is very low (6'10" as an estimate). The roof pitch is quite steep so I don't think it was to do with planning. The top of the windows come up to my eye line (I'm 6').…

How to heat 1900s terraced house during winter
Hello! Hoping to get some advice from more experienced home owners around temperatures. In the past I have rented well insulated houses in other countries and in London I only ever lived in flats where I rarely/ever needed to put heating on, even in winter. Now however, I own a 3 bedroom terraced 1900s house and am waking…

light bulb query
Hi I have seen a new 5 bulb ceiling light that I like the look of. It says it takes 5 x 25W max SES golf ball. I am almost sure what I have at present has 5 x 40w (possibly halogen) bulbs in it. So would the new one be only about 60% as bright as what I already have? Or am I missing something? Thanks

Cleaning Plug Holes
I'm open to all suggestions (natural or chemicals) but looking at some sort of expanding foam cleaner or something that will really give the pipes a good clean through. They're not blocked but a little smelly and due to the make up of our shower waste pipe (it's practically horizontal for a lot of the run), there's quite a…

Dodgy Roofing
A few weeks ago during a heavy downpour we noticed the roof was leaking as water was running down the bathroom wall. A few roofing companies were contacted and a couple came back with prices. They all agreed that I needed the 'verge' of my roof re-bedding and mortaring along with the ridge tiles. The contractor I chose had…

Advice re insulating over boarded loft
Hi - we have a boarded loft over one of our bedrooms. The bedroom gets very cold and we would like to add some insulation. Novice DIYer - so can I just lay some insulation over the top of the boards?
