light bulb query

Hi

I have seen a new 5 bulb ceiling light that I like the look of.

It says it takes 5 x 25W max SES golf ball.

I am almost sure what I have at present has 5 x 40w (possibly halogen) bulbs in it.

So would the new one be only about 60% as bright as what I already have?

Or am I missing something?

Thanks

Yes, it will be dimmer with halogen bulbs.
However, you won't be able to find even 10W LED golf bulb, and 8W will be equivalent to about 60W incandescent (but bigger than halogen one and may not fit into any light fitting)

Put some 5W SES LED golf ball bulbs in. They are roughly equivalent to 40W halogen, and you can choose the light colour as well as saving energy.

Bearing in mind, halogen bulbs are slated for removal from the market as incandescent bulbs were, be careful.
To compare bulbs, you need to look at the lumen rating and the colour temperature.

If the fitting is OK for 25w SES golf ball bulbs then you can safely fit 7w LED SES golf ball bulbs.

7w LED bulbs give equivalent light output to 40w halogens

the problem folk have with picking bulb nowadays is because "for almost ever" all lightbulbs were of one type : incandescent, and therefore the amount of energy consumed (that's the measurement in watts W) had a direct correlation to the amount of light it produced(measured in lumems lm), so manufacturers and or sellers decided to skip that part where they tell the and user how bright it is and just list it by how much power it uses...
now we have many types of lighting technology, and each of them are very different in terms of efficiency. for example, an incandescent at 60W emits around 800 lumens, a compact fluorescent that consumes 15W of power can also provide 800 lumens, and now in 2021 your average good quality LED bulb will only consume 9W of power to provide 800 lumens.
every light bulb sold now they say how bright it is in lumens and how much power it uses in watts. you will maybe notice that a branded LED bulb with a 5year warranty emits 800lm will use 9W, but a Chinese no name equivalent with no warranty will emit 1200lm for the same 9W power drawn, but realistically the Chinese bulb will only last about a year and then it'll fail...

    And that's not all.
The max. power in specification comes from the heat produced by a bulb.
40W LED bulb produces just about 8W of heat.
40W incandescent bulb produces more then 35W of heat.
So, if specifications say 40W max, you can easily put more than 100W LED bulb in the fitting, although this will be about 600W in traditional terms and hardly makes any sense.

I understand - but please confirm/correct - that an LED colour temp of 3000K is pretty close to 'halogen' white?
2,700K is very noticeably 'warm' - yellowish.

    2700k - 3000k is deemed warm white
    4000k is cool white
6000k daylight (has a blueish tinge to it)

cool white seems to be the most popular colour rating where i work selling these lamps.

In my bathroom I have few old G4 halogen bulbs along with modern (cool) white G4 LEDs - and the former are incredibly yellow in comparison.
The LEDs are 2700-3500K as per the specification.

We replaced 9 halogen spots in our kitchen with "daylight" LEDs when we extended the house and blocked a lot of natural light coming into the kitchen. Huge energy saving and it really is like daylight in there even when it's dull outside. :)
Don't buy cheap chinese bulbs though. They don't last anything close to the claimed hours, you'll be lucky to get a year out of one.
