Roof Terrace..
I have recently had an offer accpeted on a Victorian terrace with a flat roofed extension. The roof is not overlooked at all owing to much higher walls on two sides and a fence up a steep hill on the back. The house has what is euphemistically reffered to as a courtyard garden but is really just an alley between the…

Skirting board around fire place
Hi All We recently had a wood burning stove and nee hearth fitted. I was expecting them to provide a full finish, but apparently not. The wall was replastered afterwards, however there’s an untidy bit at the bottom. I’m a complete DIY novice, but trying to develop my skills and do more of the basic jobs around my house.…

Smelly WC
I recently bought a 3 storey town house which is only 4 years old. Since day 1 we have been having sewage smell in our ground floor wc. It gets especially worse when one of the toilets on the floor above is flushed after a dump. No other toilets are impacted (have 4 in total).Called in a plumber previously to make sure…

Laying engineered wood flooring over existing
I am planning to have engineered wood flooring installed on top of existing floor boards and would love your wisdom on the following: The flooring man said that there is no need for underlay - the boards can just be glued down on top of the existing planks. Is this correct? He also suggested leaving the existing tall…

Decorator left ragged edges
I have had 2 rooms wallpapered with thermal liner, the first they did a great job, the second the edges are ragged along the edge. I’ve not paid them yet but I’m quite unhappy. Any ideas on next options? It can’t be removed as the glue is too strong but maybe filled?

The company is some distance away and the owner has agreed to my price but I have to arrange for scaffolding to be placed around the conservatory so his…

Battery for Dyson V7
I guess that I need a new battery for my Dyson V 7 as it isn't holding a charge. There are various prices on t'interweb but am nervous about opting for the lower prices. Do I need to go to Dyson or can I rely upon a cheaper one. Does anyone have experience of this? Thanks.

Patio subbase depth
Hi, I'm getting a new sandstone patio installed in back garden. My landscape gardener tells me that a subbase of 5 cm type 1 mot followed by 3 cm of concrete and slabs on top is sufficient. Is this correct? Online paving vendor websites suggest that it should be 10 cm subbase. Thanks Marina

What's a window head drip?
Hi, just a quickie here. We had new double glazing fitted in our flat (Housing Association tenant) way back in early 2017, had (and still got) lots of problems with them, namely freezing cold draughts coming in through the top of the frames and ridiculous cold air rushing in through the closed trickle vents - which let…

vacuum cleaner pulls cat fur up and leaves it on carpet.
Hi I have a hoover whirlpool cylinder cleaner which mostly works fine cleaning my carpets. the issue I have with it is that it pulls the cat fur out the carpet and then instead of devouring it into the waste container, it tends to leave it in little bits scattered on the surface of the carpet. I get the feeling the machine…

Breathable masonry paint - small tins?
Hello, Following on from a previous thread, we used Johnstone’s pliolite paint for our rough cast render as the render was cement based. We now need to paint some bricks (already painted otherwise we’d leave), but want to use breathable paint for this. Solid brick, old house. I’ve seen mixed reviews about the breathability…

Reducing size of brick fireplace opening to fit inset fire
Took chimney breast back to brickwork as all walls needs re-plastering. Wanting to fit an inset living flame gas fire (with marble hearth and backboard) but the existing fire opening is too big. Foundations: cost relative to extension
Hi, this is me again with another question regarding a single storey rear extension. All the builders quotes we have are based on 1m foundations for the new extension. There is always the possibility that a building inspector requires deeper foundations (there is for example a large tree about 8m away from where the…

soundproofing
Any idea if floor-to-ceiling built-in bookcases filled with books on either side of a chimney breast would be (as) effective as building a soundproofing wall in the alcoves in reducing noise (mainly voices) from next door?
