Immersion Heaters
Seems I have a pin hole leak in the immersion heater. The plumber discovered it when flushing the radiators and he had a powerful torch.I've been offered 2 sorts, copper or stainless steel. I get that the satinless steel lasts longer but I'm getting on in years so longevity isn't really a worry. Are there any opinions on…

Soil pipe outside the house is leaking
hi, I just want an advise regarding the soil pipe outside our house, it is leaking whenever I flush the toilet. Do you think it is worth calling in a plumber or should we seal it ourselves like DIY? Thanks for the insight!

Windows Open When Humidity Outside is High?
Hi all We had a condensation issue last week and I just wanted to improve my understanding of indoor and outdoor humidities. I tend to try and let let fresh air into the house where I can to try to keep it well ventilated. Obviously this can lead to increased heating bills etc. However, if I want to lower or limit the…

Fibre optic Christmas tree
My tree stopped working and it seems to be the cable just where the jack plug fits into the socket, which has a 3 pin plug/adaptor(?). Would it be safe to cut the jack plug off and connect the cable to a 13 amp plug?

Bamboozled by what sort of external doors to get
Front and back doors are from the 70s and flimsy and draughty, where do I start to look for what to replace them with and what factors to take into account? I don't like the look of upvc doors and want something fairly traditional with part glazing but that's all I know really.

What kind of electric plug is this please?
as per the title. It's going into an old tube light (under kitchen cabinet) which has stopped working. The plug itself and cable are fine so I would just like to buy a tube light fitting into which I can plug this into. Does anyone have any idea what type this is please so I can buy the correct tube light. Thank you

Buying bifold doors - what should i look for
We are due to open up the back wall of the house, remove the back door and kitchen window and want to fit bifold doors, with one that opens as a normal traffic door to use every day. We'd like aluminium doors, in white, with as small a sightline as possible. Any recommendations please? Also, what should we look for in…

Painting new plaster cornice for the first time
We had brand new plaster cornice manufactured and installed in one room just before Christmas. It's now nice and dry and ready to paint. I had intended to use a watered down coat of emulsion first, as I did on the freshly skimmed walls, but I checked with the installer and he said just a regular coat straight away would be…

£100 for a 2 minute job?
Hi, We recently purchased our new home and noticed a leak stain on the kitchen ceiling directly above the bath. The previous owners had sealed the bath panel in with the floor tiles and wall tiles which meant having to rip the bath panel off to get underneath. After doing some checks myself I thought it was the overflow…

Is planning permission required to put back in an internal wall to split out a merged semi detached
Hi, we currently live in a merged semi detached house, the property is only connected by a single internal wall removed, no other external physical changes and the deeds are still as two separate properties with the Land Registry. The council tax is for the property as a single house. We would like to split this out to 2…

How to separate metal drawer runners. Help!
Hi. Really hoping someone will help me with this conundrum. I am trying to reassemble a wardrobe with drawers. Originally badly assembled by someone else. The runners are as per the pics. I need to fit this runner to one drawer but can't see any obvious release mechanism such as the usual plastic lever. We have another…

Neighbours noise
For the last month or so I've been able to hear my neighbours music and radio clearly in all rooms of my house and it's driving me insane. It wakes me up early in the morning and it can be heard over the TV. I'm sure they don't actually have it that loud but the walls must be thin and I'm sensitive to noise due to issues…

Options for extension - advice/ideas
Hi all Looking for ideas and advice. We have just moved into a new home and are considering our options for improvements in the next 12-18 months. It has an integral garage that we definitely want to convert to a playroom, and we would potentially like to extend above it to add a 4th bedroom. The external garage wall is…

Arch removal - what do we need?
We want to get the archway removed between our lounge and dining room. Plenty of neighbours have done the same thing. We know we will need a new beam/support to go in at the top. We've had 2 quotes so far. 1 from a local Master Building Firm which included full structural engineer report, building control and all the work,…

Opinions on stormdry/masonry cream
Hey, Can masonry sealant cream be used as an alternative for missing cavity trays in a cavity wall with a living space underneath? I've been quoted by a builder to have this done but not sure if it actually stops water penetration during driving rain. Regards

Recommended thermostatic douche mixer that's relatively easy to fit?
Firstly, I understand a douche (and more specifically a thermostatic mixer douche) is not for everyone. However, this is what I want so I'd very much appreciate if we not make this thread about why I want what I want or to question that. With that out of the way, I need to get my hands on a good quality and easy to fit…

Permitted Development?
Hi, I am looking for some advice to whether the following house extension would be covered under permitted development or not. I have read conflicting info saying all front extensions are not but also heard they can be depending on the distance to the main road. I have made a simple illustration of it. Forgive the poor…
