Flickering lights, any thoughts ?
Any electricians or knowledgable members any thoughts on this. We have noticed many of our lights flickering recently, I would say pretty minor flickering. This affects stand alone lights plugged into the ring main. I have two in my lounge plugged into seperate sockets and they both flicker simultaneously. Lights on the…

Cracks in wall
Hi, Around 2 year ago my living room and dining room were seperated (it was open plan) with plasterboard (I'm guessing, I didn't live here then) however, I've just noticed that there is a big crack up the wall and then random little jaggered cracks on the left side of the wall, which i'm thinking is where the brick wall is…

Garage outbuilding revamp
Hello We have a garage which sits on its own in the back of common driveway near the garden. Its not huge but it has been rebuilt about 20 years ago so a relatively large car will fit with some effort. At the moment we park on the street because it's honestly more convenient than going through the tiny driveway, circle…

Toilet seat hinge replacement
One of the toilets in our house has hinges that are peeling (e.g. not solid metal) and it cannot be cleaned properly. The peeling just gets worse and looks nasty. I don't mind buying a whole new seat, but will the hinge fittings likely be universal - not sure on my toilet standards!

Sub standard wall definition
I had a T.V fall from a mounted wall. The bracket manufacturer said they are not liable as it’s a dot and dab wall and bracket not suitable. They also mention at there being a void? Their installation instructions says they are not liable for fixing into a sub standard wall. Not specifically saying that they mean Dot &…

How to touch up vintage brown furniture?
I bought an old lump of dark brown furniture that has a lot of chips, scratches and scrapes. I might one day get around to sanding it down and doing a proper job, but in the meantime, is there a quick-fix way to cover up the light patches? It will come into contact with clothes and other fabrics so it would need to be a…

New double glazing-plasterer or DG company to finish job?
Just had new DG installed but the bay window has proven a problem. The plaster on the ceiling of the bay area has perished and the DG team said they cannot finish trimming everything until we get that redone. Likewise on one of the walls to the side of the window. DG team assured us everything would be insulated but we'd…

Has anyone used a Mr. Venty Envirovent PIV System?
Hey everyone, I've got massive damp in my bedroom and bathroom. I live in a tenement flat (circa 1900) and the way they were built is they put a bathroom in much later (50's maybe). In the bathroom there are no windows and there's a extractor fan but it's in the shower which is a massive health and safety risk, thankfully…

Help! - Crack in external wall outside home
Hi again. I have created a new thread because my contractor who has been appointed to do a new en-suite bathroom spotted an external crack which my surveyor missed. I have completed on the property and paid for a full Building Survey i.e. level 3 from a RICS qualified surveyor. The Building Survey did not call out this…

Combo boiler making whirring sound
Hello, since having a new combo boiler installed a couple of years ago it makes a strange noise when the heating is on and I run the hot tap. The rest of the time it is fine, the only time is when the heating has warmed up and the hot water is running, it’s a loud whirring noise. After the taps turned off it carries on for…

Tiling Under Gas Cooker?
Looking to have the Kitchen Floor tiled but wondering if the Gas Cooker would need to be disconnected and re-connected later after the floor has dried etc. I would rather not have to pay a Gas Fitter to do this and wondered if it is possible to lever the cooker into the air although this does sound stupid. Is it possible…

Anyone got a Mira Platinum digital shower?
We're redoing our shower and I'm thinking of fitting a Mira Platinum digital dual feed shower. The online reviews I've read have been mostly highly positive, with a couple of really dreadful ones. I was hoping some fellow MSE folks might have one and be able to give me a personal view on how they fare after being installed…

Washing machine recommendations
Hello, we are buying a house and will need to buy a washing machine. I'm not even sure where to start. What are the things to consider and where should I start looking? Edited to add: I'd like to buy something that I won't need to replace in 3 years... Usage light to medium, it's just me and my husband, so probably doing…
