Thermstatic controlled shower gone cold

I have had a thermostatic controlled shower in my bathroom for approx 13 years. Now even when turned right up its freezing cold. So I believe its the thermostat that has gone as I get hot water out of the taps from the combi boiler I have.

I am not sure if I can get a new one as its so old. Silly question do I need to turn the water off before I take the knob that is used to control the temp?

As at the moment my stop tap wont turn off. Its on a long list of plumbing issues that need to be sorted. Once I can find a decent plumber that can come and do it.

Thanks in advance

Yes, you have to isolate both hot & cold water supply to the shower. Changing a thermostatic cartridge is fairly straightforward as long as you can get a suitable replacement cartridge, which I don't think you'll have a problem with.
  • Most likely the mechanism has furred up and jammed due to hard water, I have a 30 year old Mira 723 and this happens every 5-6 years. 12 years isn't that old and spare parts are very likely to be available.

There might be isolation valves on the pipework for the shower. Also put the plug in to stop screws etc vanishing.

I can't see where any isolation valves would be. As it goes straight in the wall. The toilet and sink that were fitted at the same time do have the valves.

But as I said I can't turn the stop tap off. if I could I would do a few jobs that I could like new innards for a toilet and the shower myself.

I am wondering if something like this might be better than a brass tap?

Spray a little WD40 down the spindle where the gland nut is, this may free it up a bit.

i have a shower fed by a combi and sometimes the flow is not enough to trigger the hot water on the combi - turning on a hot tap as well (for a few seconds) is often enough to trigger the hot water
