Flickering lights, any thoughts ?

Any electricians or knowledgable members any thoughts on this.
We have noticed many of our lights flickering recently, I would say pretty minor flickering. This affects stand alone lights plugged into the ring main. I have two in my lounge plugged into seperate sockets and they both flicker simultaneously. Lights on the lighting cicuit also flicker, I assume they would flicker at the same time as the two stand alone lounge lights but I cannot confirm this at this time. The fact that the lighting circuit and lights on the ring main are affected seems to rule out local problems i.e a faulty light or ring main socket ? When I google this there is a lot of alarming talk connecting flickering lights/faulty wiring causing house fires ! I appreciate for peace of mind I probably need to get an electrician in the check, however I do wonder if I am over-reacting.

Talk to your neighbours and see if they've noticed similar; if so, worth a call to the local supplier. If not, perhaps a sparkie.0

Thanks for the reply.
Yes I intend to ask my neighbours, when I can catch them !0 -
What kind of lamps are they?
What kind of flickering is it - random or a continuous pattern?0 -
I had this.
I'm not a qualified electrician, but turn EVERY light on on that ring. Do the lights stop flickering? If so, there's a loose connection somewhere.
Apparently, the demand for power from having all the lights on 'bridges' the poor connection gap.0 -
Easy test: does a table light, or a lead light, plugged into the sockets flicker?
Sounds like a bad connection in the lighting circuit though, although some people are more susceptible to mains flicker than others depending on the lighting type.
I've literally just fixed a bad connection in my loft lights, they'd been having the occasional flicker for a while (incandescent bulbs up there for the few minutes they get used). Loose neutral connection in a ceiling rose.0
