Self levelling compound on part of kitchen floor?
Our kitchen floor has vinyl sheet with self levelling compound underneath up to kitchen unit. I'm thinking to put LVT or tile in new kitchen. Does anyone know if I can just level and fill up the lower area with no previous self levelling compound or must I levelled the whole kitchen? Am I also right to think if my DIY self…

OId fireplace surround - how do we value it?
My partner and I are currently renovating our new (very old!) house and are changing the fireplace surround because it is too big for the room. We have no idea how to value it, or who we would ask to value it, or whether it is worth anything at all! Any help would be really appreciated :) The house was built in the 1890s…

Cost of tap washer replacement
I have a dripping cold water bath tap. The speed of the drip is increasing and I need to find a plumber to replace the washer. The bath and taps are very old, fitted in 1949, would replacement washers be available? I am hoping that taps might be a standard size but before I try to find a plumber who isn't going to charge…

Horstmann Economy 7 Quartz Hot water timer
Hi all, I've recently moved into a rented flat that uses Horstmann Economy 7 Quartz Hot water timer to control the boiler. I've previously always been in gas-powered properties and so am not too sure of the ins and outs of electrical heated boilers. As it is, it switches to 'on' between 2am-7am (which I believe is the…

Kitchen haggling
Hi all, Although I'm a long-time lurker on the MSE forums I finally decided to join as I am looking for some advice. This is the first time I've ever purchased a kitchen and this will be the most expensive purchase we've made with the exception of the house itself, so I'm unfamiliar with the…

Quotes for plastering (5 large rooms)
Hi all I'm soon to move in to new apartment and one of the first things that needs to be done is plastering - big priority. Rooms are large with 3+ m high walls. I worked out that worst case scenario it'll be about 275 sq m of walls that'll need plastering. The property is in Glasgow. Anyone got any clue as to what I'm…

Thermostatic valve for radiator - worth it?
Does installing thermostatic valves for radiators really make a lot differences? We are doing house renovation and liked a high end radiator brand. Bought total six radiators from this brand but didn't realised their thermostatic valves are really expensive , I.e.£100 each. But the normal valves only cost £30 . We wonder…

Building Regs Confusion
I'm in the process of getting some quotes for the repair/replacement of a conservatory roof and I'm getting a little confused with the building regulations required that the various companies are telling me of. Bear with me, this may be a long post... I currently have a cheap, poly-carb roof, on a simple, lean-to type…

Push down plug in bath.

Brain twister - floor levels (hoping Doozergirl is about)
I’d be really grateful if anyone can wrap their head around this: I want to put in underfloor heating in two adjacent rooms and install ceiling insulation in the smaller one which is a side extension. I’m trying to work out how to achieve the fewest changes in floor levels while minimising the amount of structural…

Expansion tank overflowing
Hi, Over the past week or so water has been flowing out of the overflow for the small expansion tank whenever the water is heating. I've taken a look in the loft and the water is hot. I've noticed that the hot water has been very hot out of the shower recently. I've just this minute turned the boiler thermostat down. Both…

Clothes pegs
Could anyone recommend any standard - not soft grip - clothes pegs? I bought some pegs many, many years ago from homebase or b&q that lasted well. Last year I bought a packet from somewhere - cannot remember where - and they are already snapping and breaking. Complete waste of money. I don't want to waste money again on…

Kitchen Tap recommendations
Just wondered if anyone can recommend a good quality monobloc kitchen tap. We currently have a Howdens Lamona Hi-Tech tap which was fitted when we replaced our kitchen some years ago. Since it was fitted we have had to replace the valve in the hot side and also the spout diffuser and now the cold side is constantly…

Plaster over old TV aerial socket
I have an old, non functioning TV aerial socket about half way up my bedroom wall that I'd like removed, filled in and plastered over, but I have no idea what kind of costs to expect for a job like this. I've had one quote for £100 which seems excessive when we had a whole room done for £350. How much is typical for this…

Extension over integral garage
I’m considering options for extending my house and looking at building over the existing integral garage to add an extra bedroom. Firstly, I need to know if the foundations are sufficient. If I have to demolish the garage and start again, that rules this out, it’ll be too expensive. So, Who do I get to check the…
