Self levelling compound on part of kitchen floor?

Our kitchen floor has vinyl sheet with self levelling compound underneath up to kitchen unit. I'm thinking to put LVT or tile in new kitchen.
Does anyone know if I can just level and fill up the lower area with no previous self levelling compound or must I levelled the whole kitchen?
Am I also right to think if my DIY self levelling is not as good as expected, then I would be better of with tiles rather than LVT?
Thanks.

I only did half my kitchen floor. Don't try putting too much down in one go and use a decent float to get a smooth joint. Give the area a good coating of bonding agent (I used an acrylic primer) and don't forget to do the edges. Her courage will change the world.
