Skirtings caulking and painting...
I cant seem to find the answer to this on google? I have a newly plastered house. So do I paint the walls first then fit the skirtings and caulk. Or do I fit skirtings and caulk first then paint after? Its seems sensible to me to paint first but things I have read seem to say caulk ready for decorating? Thanks!

Are all PVA the same?
Hi all, We're renovating our flat at the moment and need to use a lot of PVA for plastering wall, tile, plaint, carpet, paint..etc. Unibond Super PVA is almost double the price of other brand like Evo-Stik or EverBuild. Are they all the same? Is it a false economy buying a cheaper one as they are thinner/diluted? Thank.

Neighbour has extended their garage on uneven ground and is 3.8m high on the boundary
My neighbour has double the length of their garage. They've built it much further back in the sloping ground and built up the low-level parts to be as high as the highest part, if that makes sense. The brick built structure is 3.8 meters at it's the highest part, but because that is just filled in / foundations does that…

Ceiling light -- maximum bulb power...?
I've just replaced a ceiling light in my hallway. The new fitting is more modern in style, but the design elements are very similar -- they both have a metal frame with glass side panels, which hangs on a chain attached to a ceiling fitting. The old light is ancient, before "energy saving" bulbs became prevalent. It takes…

Asbestos found in soil around new extension
Hello, I am trying to sell my house, and the property is under offer. Rather frustratingly the buyers have done a survey of the garden and land around an extension that was built approx 6 years ago. The survey has turned up asbestos in the aggregate that was used as infil around the foundations for the extension. I am…

What IS that smell from the flat downstairs?
I own a flat in a block and the flat below me is let out to a company that houses people on a temporary basis (think less single vulnerable moms and more fresh from the clink slightly scary young men). So over the last couple years I have had to deal with my fair share of noise and smells from below, including heavy…

Boiler pressure
Hi yesterday Scottish Water fixed a leak in my supply pipe and the plumber said he was surprised I had been getting any water to my house as pressure was so low. . Rightly or wrongly I thought the increase in pressure had effected my boiler so I bled my radiators to bring the pressure down. After that I thought the problem…

Exterior Door opening onto Sewer Drain?
Is it good practice to build a doorway which would step out directly on top of a public sewer drain in the back garden, instead of lining the door with the path the builder has positioned it so you step out onto the sewer or without cover into the sewer. I am arguing with them about this issue!

constantly whining dog next door
We live in a very built up urban area with very small gardens, little more than yards. Recently the youngish retired couple next door acquired a dog which whines or cries or barks almost continuously. They sleep in the front of the house but we sleep in the back and it is quite intrusive. It goes on until late in the…
