Boiler and heating cover
Today I got my boiler and central heating cover renewal in the post. What a shock, £396.92 this was covering my 11yr old boiler and C/H I phoned them and got it down to £228 but I told them I would cancel and look around. I have found some more cover but it's £8 a month with £75 excess. Have I done right by accepting this?…

Quote for installation of new door
I want to replace the normal door on my bathroom and replace it with a sliding door (on the outside of the wall, not inside the wall). I've been quoted £300 (excluding materials) for this. Does this seem reasonable?

Replace boiler and tanks with combi?
We have an old valiant boiler in our kitchen, and an airing cupboard with water cylinder in it and 2 tanks in the loft, the boiler is approx 15 years old. We are doing some decorating/plastering and if we replace the boiler with a modern combi boiler, we could do away with the airing cupboard (and tanks in the loft) and…

House survey down valued the house - money back
Me and my other half are first time buyers and have recently had an offer accepted on a house for 215k. We had a home buyers report carried out and although no significant issues were found the house was valued at 190k. As a result the amount we can borrow has been restricted based on the revised value and if we want to…

Wochester or Vaillant
So my eyes are set on a wochester 30i. Long story short I had a quote for £2077 which I thought was good and now that's not happening I have a new guy. He's really pushing a vaillant and as far as I can see it has good reviews and it's £100 cheaper. But his quote for a 30i is under £1900 and wochester are the leading…

Sewage in garden, again, need advice to get Thames Water to do something
So for the 5th time since March the main sewer pipe, (which runs under our garage and down the garden), has blocked downstream. There is a manhole cover where the pipe changes direction and this is where the sewage comes out, the block is much further down. Luckily the garden slopes away from the house, and at the end of…

Vaillant Home System 12: How to top up?
The pressure is flashing, alternating displaying 0.4 and 0.5 bar. All the instructions say is that I should have been shown by the competent person how to top up the hot water system (I wasn't given any hand-over on this system). Neither manual (user/installer) has a decent diagram of the system & its connections. I'm used…

Carpet vs rug
Hi All, Just looking to see if any of you have any experience with the following? I need to buy a big rug (approx 2m x3m) for a tiled dining room floor. I don’t want to laminate/fully carpet the floor because money/preference. So looking around it looks like I’d pay £120+ on Wayfair/eBay for a big decent-ish rug. However I…

Cancelling new heating installation
I got a quote for a new heating system and provisionally arranged a date over the phone. Have not signed the acceptance or paid the deposit. I then changed my mind but they have invoiced me the deposit of £1500 and say they can't cancel the booking. Do I have to pay it? I tried to cancel 9 days before they were due.

Ideal Boiler problem
Hi I wonder if I could have some advice on this situation. In Jan 2014 a local GasSafe engineer installed a brand new Logic+24 boiler. He told me it was 5 years warranty, and now to worry , he already registered the warranty with Ideal, and he gave me an 18 digit alphanumeric reference number for this. The boiler, now 3.5…

At the monent I can only find tunnel extensions that are tiny and clip together, meaning I need to pay £50 odd for enough plastic to go through a cavity wall. None of it is even going to be seen. Any other solutions, please? Put one in a brand new composite door?

What is a non-dimmable light?
We bought two lights from B&Q that use G9 bulbs: http://www.diy.com/departments/mantus-chrome-effect-5-lamp-ceiling-light/1702673_BQ.prd?icamp=recs&rrec=true We then put 5 9W bulbs in each, which gave us an incredibly bright room. Our solution was to fit a dimmer:…

Project Planning / Best use of space
Hi, I've just bought a house that has had the loft converted, but it needs a new roof. My neighbor had their roof replaced and the addition of 2 dorms added. They also converted a small bedroom into staircase. When I asked about theirs, they had said they "got someone who had advised on the best use of the space and…
