Where should I buy internal oak doors from ?
We want to change some doors in the house and my wife has picked the 4 panel oak door for most, with a couple of others being the half glazed versions of the same door. Having previously worked in building industry I tried my local Howdens, but of course they only sell to the trade. As I’ll be fitting the doors myself I…

Cutting into an existing patio
I am redoing my overgrown and neglected garden. As part of it I really want to create a curved patio, like a semicircle. There is already a patio there (see pic), so I was thinking to do a DIY job to reduce it to a semicircular shape. Basically mark out the curve, and then cut into it using an angle grinder. Would I need…

Bush fridge freezer, drip tray?
Hi, I have a Bush fridge freezer. Had it for 5 years, never experienced any issues with it but for the past few days I can smell something. I believe it's coming from my fridge. I've searched online and all comments I've seen lead to the drip tray. I've had a look at the back of the fridge and the only tray like thing I…

Bricks vs breeze blocks and plaster
The drawings for my small extension show a double layer of bricks. I'm being asked if I want breeze blocks and plaster on the inner layer instead. I'm not sure why, but I suspect it may be because many of the bricks broke, and the bricks have to be an exact match to the existing. Is there any difference in practical terms…

High hedges act or what ever it is?
Hi, posted here as unsure if there is a better section. I understand the HHA as detailed on the GOV site, but what I can't find is what is the definition of a hedge? I, like most will think a hedge is something that divides neighbours, (often literally), ie, it's a boundary issue. But take a scenario where a 10 foot hedge…

Stud wall or Brick wall for ground floor extension bathroom shower?
I would prefer single brick wall but builder is suggesting stud wall with cement sheet... The outer cavity wall is already done with brick outer and blocks inside. The internal wall is between bedroom, utility, study and shower. Should this be a single brick wall or stud wall with cement sheets for water proofing?

Washing machine noisy when spinning
Hi all, Got a 3 year old AEG washing machine from JL. Cost about £300 IIRC. Started to get noisier during the fast spin stage. Could it be bearings? Which I've heard are sealed inside and can't be replace easily? If it is a problem is it best to: 1. Buy a new machine , 3 years service for £300 is only £9 a month 2. sign up…

anyone familiar with this kitchen manufacturer
There is precious little info on their website but were recommend to me by a third party on the basis that their carcasses are much better quality than anything the major nationals provide (Wickes Howdens etc)and they dont use foil wrapped PET, vinyl or any other rubbish that delaminates in a few years, preferring lacquer…

New bed questions
Hello all I went down to the town this afternoon to lie on a few mattresses. The salesman said that the new mattresses these days don't need turning anymore. Does anyone know if that is true? Or is it just a ploy so the repeat business comes round quicker!? I thought turning the mattress was what extended it's life. I was…

Cost for kitchen dinner
Our kitchen is dated and is small. We have a dinning room next to it that is separated by a plasterboard wall. How much would it cost to knock the wall down and have a new kitchen put in so it's an open kitchen dinner. I know it depends what you want by way of fitments but has anyone had one done for some rough costs…

Replacement back boiler?
Hello, I have a Baxi back boiler which is over 30 years old and obsolete. I've not had a single problem with it in the ten years I've lived in the house, and have no wish to change it. However, I am having a lot of work done in the house, including a loft conversion and cosmetic updating, and it seems sensible to get a new…
