Vacuum cleaner thermal cut out?
Seems like thermal cutout switch comes into operation after a few minutes use on our Bissell Powerclean hoover. Works fine again for a short while so am putting the issue down to the switch Can this be repaired/replaced as a DIY or is it time for the great hoover graveyard in the sky? Cheers as usual

Extractor Fan Query
Hi all, Just moved into a new flat and there's a brand new extractor fan above the hob. The problem is that there's a block of polystyrene packaging inside the fan that needs removing before first use, and the light bulb is still in the box inside the fan. Is it safe for me to do the above myself, or do I need to wait to…

Replacing our Car Port Roof
We have a car port that was probably built some 20-30 yrs ago with timber supports, fencing on the outer perimeter with a corrugated lean to sloped roof which when new was probably see through but is now filthy and difficult to get clean. Temperature in my larder
I live in an ex-council flat and it has one of those lovely floor-to-ceiling cupboards for storing food in. My kitchen backs on to my neighbour's kitchen, and the other week she had a new boiler installed. Now, when I open the door to my larder, it feels warm - the back wall is warm to the touch. Same with the cupboard…

Granite worktops
I'm looking at getting a new kitchen at some point in the next year and have always been keen on granite (or quartz) worktops. I know they're expensive, but sometimes it's worth paying the extra for quality. What do people think - are they worth it? I suppose it might be cheaper if getting a basic kitchen from one company…

Worried about security
Hi, apologies for the very nervous post. We completed in the purchase of our house yesterday and was so excited to get in and crack on with the renovations before we move in. We bought it and was expecting to completely gut it and start again. I noticed that the UPVC French doors in the dining room onto the garden had…

Smart thermostats and similar central heating wizardry
Hi all Old house, 450 square metres. Leaky single-glazed windows +some secondary glazing. Gas central heating. Currently heating is ON or OFF. It's a PITA becuase our approach to heating is all or nothing, whether it is 10 degrees outside or minus 10. What I'd really like is to zone the house, and control the temperature…

Celotex for floating floor?
I'm planning on insulating a concrete floor in a garage type structure using celotex board insulation and chipboard. I've read the main 2 ways are either to make a battened frame & fill the gaps with celotex (or similar) or just make a 'floating floor' where the celotex is placed on the whole floor then the chipboard on…

Paint interior door and skirting
Never painted in my life! Thinking of giving the above a ggo rather than get someone in as I did with interior. They both seem in good nick. Main concern is getting paint on the locks or my floor with the skirting. Is it sufficient for both to sugar soap clean and then apply a coat of dulux white and then second coat…

Also looks dull and dirty. What's the best thing to get it shiny and clean and give it a new lease of tile (ditto kitchen tiles). Thank you.

Hi Just hoping to ask for a bit of advice. We're expecting our first baby and want to get started on painting what will be their bedroom. However, it looks like the previous tenants have tried to put matt paint on top of silk, resulting in lots of cracked paint. I was wondering if there's anything I can use over the top to…

Decorating Advice. Painting walls in half tiled bathroom.
Hi, our bathroom is half tiled. The walls are painted magnolia and the tiles are also a beige or magnolia colour. The top edge of the tiles appears to have been painted with the same paint as the walls. We are repainting in a different colour, a pale yellow probably, but keeping the tiles. Should we paint the walls only or…
