Problems getting builders....
I have had 4 builders round my house but none seem interested and received no quotes. This is not a small job and doing it in phases there is 3 months work for the right bloke. I just don't understand why builders are not coming back to me. I am not stupid as my family have a building background so told them exactly what…

How much to install woodburner when we don't have a chimney?
Hi All, I would like to install a wood burning stove but live in a 70's built house with no chimney. I was wondering if anyone could give me a rough idea how much it would cost to put a stove in. I realise that the flue would have to go up though living room ceiling, up through bedroom, into loft then out through the roof.…

Rising damp in internal wall?
Last year I bought a leasehold flat on a council estate. It's on the ground floor, though the ground slopes away and there are garages under the bedroom and living room. It was built in 1970, cavity walls, concrete floor. I was thinking about getting a full survey but the mortgagee went ahead and just got a standard…

DPC and air brick levels
Hey guys, I know that the DPC layer should be a couple of bricks above ground level. Should the air bricks be lying on this layer, or a course below it (i.e. the top of the air brick at the DPC level). The side of the house the air bricks are at ground level, which in my opinion isn't good practice. Should I get the ground…

New loft hatch installation
hi all As part of a bathroom refurm, we are having to install a new loft hatch on our landing. Obviously the loft clutter / valuables around the new space will need to be cleared; but I wondered whether EVERYTHING in the loft needs to be emptied too? It currently just has a number of large wooden boards down, not "boarded"…

electric fire labelled as 'shelf wear'
I've seen some new electric fires at an online store labelled as 'shelf wear.' It says that the fires are being sold at a cheap price because the box shows signs of shelf wear. But the product inside is brand new, high quality with no damage such as scratches or dents. Just wondering if any has any experience of buying…

Fitting socket wall crumbled

Locating dishwasher thermostat?
I have a countertop dishwasher (Bush WQP6-3202-FS11) which doesn't seem to be heating up properly. Google results suggest the thermostat is a likely problem, and quite simple to find and check on many models. Counter top versions are more tricky if https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ykwxryeMtTY is anything to go by. Can…

Home Alarm System - DIY or Fitted recommendations..
Hi All, I am due to move house very soon, it's a relatively safe area and I've noticed half the homes on my new estate have alarms and half don't.
