Problems getting builders....

I have had 4 builders round my house but none seem interested and received no quotes. This is not a small job and doing it in phases there is 3 months work for the right bloke. I just don't understand why builders are not coming back to me. I am not stupid as my family have a building background so told them exactly what was needed.

A decent builder won't need or want to jump between projects

Maybe in your meetings it came across (rightly or wrongly) that you would be telling them how to do their job, and they didn't fancy being so closely supervised?

Im having the same problem with plumbers and drainage people. Half of them dont even turn up never mind give a quote.

  • Works done over extended time period to some suggests funds are not there, Also “so told them exactly what was needed” Its there business to know and there reputation etc that’s on the line, is a sign to many to walk away? If you assume they know there job you don’t need to tell them? Yes give plans, drawing, calculations finish requirements colours etc but “needed” many attitude would be if client thinks they know so much then they go to an agency and employ the workers themselves or there just a diyer wanting to pick there brains for free …

Could be a number of reasons. Our main one for not getting back to bigger jobs is if it looks like x and y will be doing such and such at such and such time, because it usually ends up with you having to fit in and around other people and it usually ends up costing you money.

A good plumber would be able to give you a rough price over the phone or certainly a day rate . With drainage most don’t want or need to go around in there mind wasting time giving free quotes as unfortunately for you there is enough hourly paying / price work already out there,,,

No I was mind full of being a "know it all" I was just using the correct terms and understanding on what is needed. I have also done it in phases as I want to trust my builder. I have had a quote now and very happy with it. (and it was the builder i liked)

I didnt mean getting a quote over the phone, i meant that when i phone people say they will come rlund and dont and those who do come round then dont bother to give a quote.

Any suggestions for getting someone to follow through potential work?

They pick and choose which jobs they want to do and always have two or three others running at the same time.
