You hear this same story so often about tradesmen not turning up. I've often thought i wish i'd learnt a trade when i first left school. I'm sure i could have earned a good living. I wouldn't have had to be the best plumber; electrician, or brickie in the world. Just the one who turned up to do the work.

In the last 6-8 months we've found that good contractors are very busy and are wary of tendering for work that looks awkward or has potential difficulties... We have got to a situation where a lot of jobs are now negotiated tenders with a preferred contractor (and a quantity surveyor) which gives them the certainty that they will get the job and they can fit it into to their planning.

What kind of information have you got for them to price op?
If it looks too loose or open they are unlikely to want to spend the time imagining what you may or may not want, similarly if you are splitting it down to bits and bobs is it really worth their while to deal with the potential hassles?
Can you not get someone with family connections to price it too?

I didnt mean getting a quote over the phone, i meant that when i phone people say they will come rlund and dont and those who do come round then dont bother to give a quote.

Any suggestions for getting someone to follow through potential work?

We are having the same problem. Why don't people say they don't want the job instead of stringing you along.

Last year I had a heating engineer out to give a quote for a heating system (bloke had put himself on the manufacturers website as a recommended tradesman). He came out to look and said he would email a quote - week later no sign so I emailed politely asking when - he came back and said he had been on holiday but would send it through - a year later I am still waiting.

I am currently waiting for someone to come back to me about cabling for my AV system, they have been out twice to have a look and quote, promised to get back to me but haven't. This was via a recommendation.

Because they MAY want the job if nothing better or more lucrative is on offer.
