Opening up a fireplace costs
The house we moved into has had all the open fires removed and bricked up. We would like to open it up and am wondering about the approximate costs. I will find the fireplace and surround myself so it is the cost of fitting it that I need. We want to install an open fire for burning wood, but not a wood burner. Does anyone…

How should I protect newly exposed vertical plaster from the elements?
I've been given a decent 2nd hand PVCu d/g portrait window to replace my rotting wooden one, but it's about 80mm narrower. It's a double brick wall (no cavity), but the inner half of the reveal is so thickly plastered (it looks like two coats) that the new window will fit with just an 8mm gap (each side) between frame and…

Metal bed - why do sellers of same model vary re if do/don't have extra 'prop' legs?!
Hi, I am interested in buying a metal bed, & have found a design we like. I have found different sellers, selling the same bed, but one of these items has extra supports/props (in addition to the standard! 4 legs at the corners), & one doesn't! CONFUSING! These supports/props are made of thinner metal than the 4 legs, &…

I've had three wasps all appear in my lounge in last 10 days. There are just floorboards so something could be coming in from below. Is it likely I've got a wasps nest? What's the cheapest way to get rid of it without chemicals?

Repairing crack in enamel bath?
I have a enamel coated metal bath which has a crack in it in the shape of a cross about 10cm x 10cm. I don't know what caused it as I haven't dropped anything heavy but wonder if it could have been a squeegee I dropped which had metal components. The cracks are very fine but I presume they could lead to rust? Does anyone…

Dividing wall in loft
I have noticed that the dividing/party wall in the loft of my 1960’s semi-detached house does not reach all the way to the top of the roof. I assume that it doesn’t act as an effective fire wall and will allow noise/air flow to pass between the two loft spaces. Is this usual?... is it something I need to address?

Repairing a felt roof
I'm hoping for a bit of advice. I noticed the other day that the felt roof on my shed has a few cuts in it (each one maybe 2 or 3 inches long) that's been caused by the storms we've had over the winter. Is there anything that I can apply to the felt to weatherproof the roof again (at the moment there's no sign of any leaks…
