Damp wall inside, possibly due to issues on the outside wall
Hi all Any damp experts here? We've just bought our first home and after ripping away the built in cabinets in the bedroom we've found some damp. There's some repointing that's been recommended in the Homebuyers survey but it looks like this is worse than expected and means moisture is getting in. My other half is handy…

Laminate flooring worn - any tips to fix?
Hi all, just wondering if any one has tips on dealing with worn areas of laminate flooring? The flooring is in the kitchen and near the sink has worn through the protective top coat. It now looks grey there and clearly has no waterproof coating as if I drip water on it, it soaks in. The floor is less that 4 years old and…

low water temperature in bath
Hi, I don't understand this at all and I'm hoping someone can enlighten me. Last night I wanted a bath, I don't go in very often, I'm a shower girl at heart, but had some leftover bubbles from last year I wanted to use up before xmas. I 1/2 ran the bath, using the hot tap only, then stopped because it wasn't hot enough. I…

Does anyone have Radiator Grilles?
Hey, I'm thinking of getting Radiator Grilles and covers installed in the New Year (these are what they look like - http://www.radiator-grilles.co.uk/) But... I'm worried they'll actually block out some of the heat and i'll have to turn my radiators up or have them on for longer (and get bigger bills)... Does anyone have…

New boiler quote
I had a few boiler men come to quote for a new boiler in my home. None of them mentioned a charge for this but now one of them is saying he will invoice for the quote. What legislation can I use to dispute this charge as it wasn't previously mentioned?

New house alarm fitted
Just wondering if this was right or not I had a new alarm fitted by a local reputable company! They fitted a Hybrid(only the bell box is wireless). When they quoted me they did not say that the bell box will not have a flashing light on the box, when I questioned it they said they do not put them in as it reduces the…

Rented Cottage - Water On Light Fittings
Hi, I've been renting a cottage (around 200 years old) for around 4 months now. We were told that it previously had condensation problems, especially over the winter months. We've done everything we can to minimise this happening again including running the dehumidifier (that was provided) and airing out the house whenever…

Ideal standard toilet seals fail annually
Hi there. We had an ideal standard close coupled toilet installed 6 years ago and since then we have had a replacement pan - the original was "deformed" and didn't flush properly - a new inlet unit, and two sets of inlet and outlet seals. All under the warranty. Now we are out of warranty and both inlet and outlet seals…

just moved house - really dusty
We have just bought a house and are moving in. It has really old carpets and I've been there the last two evening and have been coughing when I get home and can feel the dust on my tongue and in my throat. Residual voltage question
My OH is driving me mad. He has a mains voltage tester and has been going around the house sticking it on metal objects like a radiator, the gas fire, a metal light fitting some of them are showing a voltage of 12V when he touches them and he now thinks that there is something wrong with the earth. Any electric experts can…

Another "cold spot" question
My lovely new (new-to-me, it's 1950's) flat has half of one bedroom, the end of the hallway, and half the bathroom, located above fresh air. This makes the floor absolutely freezing in the winter, as I have recently discovered, and makes those rooms cold as a knock-on effect. The building is listed and so insulating from…

UPVC french doors
I wonder if anyone can give me the benefit of their opinion please. At the moment we have wooden french doors between the kitchen and the garden. Although they are double glazed ( two opening doors and two fixed side panels), they are very draughty. Even the key lock blows a howling gale at times! I want to swap them for…

Central heating conundrum
Moved into house three weeks ago and gave problems with the gas central heating. The radiators run from upstairs downwards, I.e., there are pipes from the upstairs running down the walls to the lower rads. There are TRVs and a thermostat. The boiler is condensing. With the four downstairs rads, the kitchen one runs off its…

Baumatic?
So this name keeps cropping up and I've never heard of them. Are their appliances any good? I've been looking for AEG ones, but Baumatic are considerably cheaper. I'm a believer of you get what you pay for, so how do they really stack up against Zanussi and AEG?
