We have just bought a house and are moving in. It has really old carpets and I've been there the last two evening and have been coughing when I get home and can feel the dust on my tongue and in my throat. I'm going to get some disposible face masks tomorrow.

However, what can I do to get rid of this dust? We cannot afford to change all the carpets at once. I'm going to start washing the curtains tomorrow. I had the front and back doors open this evening and the upstairs windows.

Will hiring a carpet cleaner machine like Rug Doctor help?

Vacuum thoroughly with a powerful machine then clean with rug doctor. Should help.
  • Thoroughly recommend hiring a rug doctor cleaner and doing a proper lean. Just moved out of a rented house with carpets ranging from the 1960's, cleaned them all and never had a sneeze from DH, who usually sneezes at just the thought of dust.
  • Our house had old foam backed carpets in it. The foam backing degrades into fine dust - make sure you wear a mask when you lift them.
