Does anyone have Radiator Grilles?

Options
Hey,

I'm thinking of getting Radiator Grilles and covers installed in the New Year (these are what they look like - http://www.radiator-grilles.co.uk/)

But... I'm worried they'll actually block out some of the heat and i'll have to turn my radiators up or have them on for longer (and get bigger bills)... Does anyone have radiator grilles/covers already? and do they affect the heat levels?

Thanks!

Anything that gets in the way of air flow around a radiator will effect its efficiency - radiators work by convecting a warm current of air around a room.

I don't care what the blurb says on the website - it will have an effect. How much of a reduction in efficiency you are happy to put up with is a personal choice, but for me it's a no no.

    IMHO

  • I have had one in the past, one of the cheap MDF ones from B&Q. I have to say we didn't notice a great impact, but we had a modern double rad concealed and the radiator was far overspec'd for the room it was in.

If your room has a rad that only just manages to get the room up to temperature, I would avoid getting one as it will affect performance. If your room is mega toasty and you're finding you need to turn the rad down frequently then go ahead!

A few years back I bought a house that had radiator grills on every radiator in the house. As nice as they looked, they definitely did restrict the amount of heat that the radiators were able to output into the actual rooms. So as a result, as much as I like the look of them, I've given radiator grills a wide berth ever since, especially with the spiralling costs of heating bills.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

We have one of the MDF ones, looks good but does restrict the heat output plus you need to leave the thermostatic valve off as it fits inside the cover so cuts the water flow to the rad off too soon.
