Asbestos Advice
Hi all, I'm hoping for some advice. We're currently in the process of buying a 70's built house. Now, not surprisingly, it came up in the survey that it may contain asbestos (not in itself that surprising). For most of the house, this doesn't worry me, as we're not planning on disturbing much for some time. However, there…

Pressure washer - detergent ?
Sorry if this is a really dumb question - it's just that I've never used a pressure washer before. After looking at prices, have decided to hire one for a weekend and see how it goes. But I'm just not clear whether or not I need to buy some detergent for it? I need to pressure wash some outdoor flags, and 2 driveways -…

Purchased flat - discovered asbestos
Hi, I have moved into a flat that I have purchased for about a month. Today we got a contractor in to do some work in the utility room, and he discovered what he believes is asbestos. It's getting tested today and we'll find out tomorrow. I am just wondering in such a case, is there anything I can do to protect myself from…

Tiling Upstairs - Bad Idea?
I'm wondering if anyone has experience of having tiled floors upstairs. We have some very good wood-effect tiles in our upstairs bathroom. We also have some really ropey floorboards in the landing and bedrooms, currently uncovered. We are thinking of using the same tiles across the landing and bedrooms. They look good, and…

Advice re downlight in a flat - fixing/changing
I have 2 lights in the ceiling of a room in my (fairly new build) flat. They are the type of cheap downlight that just plug into a hole in the plaster in the ceiling. They fit a 50W halogen bulb that just pushes in (and is a pain to remove). There's no cover or anything on the lights and it's not in the kitchen or…

Solar PV System - Problem With Inverter
My system works but there is a niggle with the Aurora Power One Inverter. This was manufactured with a defective radio module - it does not transmit a signal to the desk top monitor. Of course, these things happen, and I am a realist. That said, the company claim to test every inverter before it leaves their…

How much for a new boiler?
I am planning a loft conversion and an extension and as I have a non combi boiler (with tanks every where) I think I need to start by changing the boiler to a combi one to free the loft space before starting work (annoying as the boiler is only 8 years old and works perfectly). How much should I expect to pay for a new…

Cottage Walls
I have removed wallpaper from the cottage walls and the walls seem to be painted with a white/cream paint that is flaking off in places. The cottage is a couple of hundred years old and been empty for a couple of years. We will probably have some 'tanking' done in parts of the cottage as there is obviously no DPC etc but…

dirty grouting between floor tiles
Have just moved to a house with big kitchen and has lovely kitchen floor tiles. Very shiny and undamaged but grubby grouting. Probably this is wear and tear and nothing you can do? I wondered about a toothbrush and bleach but probably take me a year! Is it one of those things that you just have to accept if light coloured…

fitting a cooker extractor, first time, need advice
Hi I'm fitting an hood extrator for the cooker and need some advice, they vary so much in price for £60 to £400+, seems a bit ridiciulous to spend £400 on essentially a fan inside a metal hood. What's a good value unit to buy?

Mounting TV on breezeblock(?) wall
Hi, I've just bought a new TV for the living room, so the old one is being moved into the conservatory. As the old one was wall mounted, we don't have a pedestal stand for it, so it will need to be wall-mounted in the conservatory. Plus as we have small kids, I'd feel much safer if the TV was fixed to the wall.…
