Do stairs (to the attic) in a bedroom declass it as a bedroom?
Pretty much as the title says. If a staircase is put in to one of 3 bedrooms to an attic (that out of interest didn't have building regs so can't be classed as another bedroom), does that mean that it can no longer be classed as a bedroom, rendering it, in effect, a 2 bedroom house? Many thanks

Soundproofing Ceiling
(I know this subject has been posted a few times, but wondering if anyone has any more recent experience). Typical situation. Old Victorian house. A lot of noise (mostly footfall) from above flat. All hours. Owner has agreed to add some layers, but that won't be till tenants move out, which could be ages. I've looked on…

House Draft
Hi, I have a house let out and the tenant has mentioned that there is a draft coming in through the windows. I have asked my handyman to seal the windows with draft filler. Short of replacing the windows and their frames which are basically old style wooden frames complete with single glaze glass is there anything else I…

Savings With Infrared Heating?
Hi there, I was thinking about installing infrared heating in my property as I have read a lot of information and comments that this type of heating can save up to 50% on energy costs. Is infrared heating that cost effective? Any experience, thoughts or advices would be much appreciated.

Gloss paint
What is the current best white gloss paint ? I believe that there was a problem with yellowing, following EU legislation, but assume that this has been remedied. As my little dogs sometimes scratch at doors, a tough paint would be a good idea.

Banging Radiators
I have a combi-boiler, which works fine. However when the heating first comes on there is a sound of water running somewhere, like out or in a radiator. Some of the radiators then give a bit of a ticking/banging noise for about 10 mins, but after while the heating is on, it's fine. The boiler was replaced a few months ago.…

Small amount of primer for peeling paint
Hi, I have a few small patches of wall where the paint is flaking/peeling. I have read up on how to fix this but I need to find a good primer and only a small quantity...a real money saving exercise. I see tins of Dulux and Zinsser but they all come in large tins. I would literally need just a few brushes worth. If it…

Fence on the front side
My semi detached property has a drive in the front. On the left side is the attached neighbour (call him Neighbour-1). The garden fence on this side is mine. The drive has a shrub hedge on this side that acts like a fence On the right side is another semi detached house (Neighbour 2). Between us, there was a shared drive…

Kitchen tile trim - too late?
Hi all, When we got our kitchen done, the tradesman was in a massive rush to finish and move on. He apparantly got a new contract. Needless to say, our finish is pathetic. He quickly did the tiling behind the counter top and forgot to put in a trim. When I confronted, he made a think beading like thing with grout and…

Ceiling overboarded with hardboard sheets....Help!
Hi, We're in the process of renovating a 1950's semi and have discovered that the plaster & lath ceiling has been overboarded with some kind of hardboard. The hardboard is about 15mm thick and the original plaster & lath ceiling is still in place. The joints have been covered with paper tape and the ceiling has been…

Cowboy builders awful job means house falling down
Hi all, I've never really made a post like this but here goes... In the summer of 2011, we had two local lads do some work on our circa 300yr old cottage. The job was to take off the old render on the roadside gable end wall (3 stories and right on the road), then to hack out the old pointing and repoint with a lime mix.…

Free Tree removal?

Refilling a futon mattress
We have a sofa futon as a spare bed for guests and over the years it has slumped in the middle. We've looked at the cost of replacing it but to get a similar one would cost at least £ 200. Is there anywhere where the mattress is just refilled thus saving a lot of money or is the only option to bite the bullet and get a new…

Buying furniture online
My husband and I are in the process of buying our first home. With that comes buying furniture. We have a furniture budget that isn't unrealistic, but isn't extravagant either, so we do need to be careful. Looking at bigger items like sofas, beds, etc... We have seen some in store that we like, but that are pushing the…

Choosing the best dehumidifier
I have been reading the thread about running cost of a dehumidifier since I need to invest in one or more dehumidifiers. Our property is currently rented and it's been for the last 4 years. The tenants are suffering from a severe condensation problem, there is mould growth ( black spots) in almost every room on the ceiling…
