Banging Radiators

I have a combi-boiler, which works fine.
However when the heating first comes on there is a sound of water running somewhere, like out or in a radiator. Some of the radiators then give a bit of a ticking/banging noise for about 10 mins, but after while the heating is on, it's fine.

The boiler was replaced a few months ago.
I've bled the radiators, all but a couple drain water. Two or three drain water but it spurts out a bit like there is a tiny bit of air left. However if I continue to bleed those radiators I'll just soak a towel.

The radiators are pretty old. There's a valve on one side, which I can open and close to lock that radiator out of use. The other side isn't a valve, nor can it be twisted.

Is there a way I can solve the ticking? It didn't happen with the boiler before.

Thanks

With a combi boiler I'm pretty sure that it's the boiler that has to be bleed not the radiators, there is a flexi pipe that has to be connected to 2 points on the boiler and the valve opened to cure the airlocks. Think you will need to read your boiler user manual to confirm wher these connection points are.

    :rotfl: LMAO :rotfl: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

The flex is to top up the water to the right pressure :rotfl:

And the ticking is probably just the metals expanding and contracting with the heat ;)

Check you have the right pressure in the system, usually 1 Bar with the system cold, run the heating for a few hours and then try bleeding with the system OFF, but you may then have to re top up the pressure as each time you let air, or water out, you lose a bit of pressure :)

Sorry for not getting back earlier.

I've tried re-bleeding a few times but this is usually when the heating has been off for a while. I'll try the other way :) The bar is 1.2/1.3, then about 1.6/1.7 when operating.

I should maybe look at the temperature of the water too and see if a lower temperature would change the noise.
  • I agree with the post above. Sounds like it's the metal of the bracket grinding against the radiator as it heats up. Probably only noticeable now as it heats up a lot faster with the new boiler that the old one.

Solution?: see if you can squeeze a small piece of card between bracket and radiator, where the radiator hangs on the bracket.
  • Sounds like an airlock
We had the same happen inour house and it took about a month of continually releasing pressure from the radiators and retopping the boiler until the banging stopped.
We still get ticking but that's because the new boilers super efficient and it's due to the quick expansion of the metals

    Hope it's sorted soon
