Storage heaters or electric radiators
Hi all, first post on here so go easy. I'm renovating a property which has some 25+ year old Creda night storage heaters. Before we started ripping the place to bits we found them to be quite poor in terms of how much heat they put out, they were not really that cheap to run and are obviously not that flexible in terms of…

gas fire issues
Hi all Had my gas safety check yesterday and gas fire has been turned off because it has the wrong coals on it. So now I either pay £160+ for a new fire or just disconnect it but keep it as a feature? I hardly use it anyway. Can a woodburner be connected to the same flue that the gas fire used? Its not a deep chimney but…

Verges and path out to the road, what permissions needed?
We live on a rural road. the (council owned) verges stand above the road by about six inches so cannot be cut easily with my (ride on) mower, but take a very long time with a strimmer (there is considerable length of verge). We have to have the ditch dug out this year, would we need permission to at the same time scrape…

Humidifier
I suffer from sinus problems and waken up every morning feeling rough. When my daughter was a baby, she had croup so we paid £57 (1979!) for a humidifier and things improved greatly for her. Yesterday I decided to buy one (an appropriate size for my bedroom) and used it last night. I certainly feel a bit better than usual…

Wood burner flue TIPS
Hi, I'm going to install a wood burner into a disused chimney in my lounge. The whole chimney above the lounge part has been removed so my plan is to knock into the chimney, clean it out a bit and put the wood burner in. I will only be able to run the pipe up the chimney a bit before it will need to go out through the wall…

Best way to look after stop tap under doormat during winter. Could be leaking.
Hi there. I would appreciate some comments about our new (c1901) house. Eventually found the stop tap located under the front door mat. This is a pic of the mat well after removing the hatch and cleaning a lot of rubbish out. It's about 5 inches deep, very damp and those wobbly bricks (no mortar) are basically all that…

3 port valve replacement
I've got a conventional heating system (Y plan) with a 3 port valve. The valve head/actuator has been temperamental lately and has now started making a clicking noise when in the mid position. I'm thinking of changing the head (not the valve) - is it as simple as it looks? i.e. isolate the electrics, remove the head, then…

Toilet Pan connecting to the floor
Hi guys, I have a small toilet room with a sewer hole in the floor, 12" off the wall. I am trying to find a floor-connecting (close coupled) toilet to replace my old one, but have had no luck. All the toilets I see have a sewer outlet at the back, not at the bottom. Is it possible to find a toilet with the sewer at the…

Installing a new Cooker Hood
Hi. I'm in a bit of dilemma with my new Cooker Hood we bought. It have two wire outs (not earth), and installation guide is completely rubbish. Googling I understood it is a category 2 appliance. As we are not keen to install a new power outlet, but have a socket near-by, can we use a "normal" 3 pin plug ignoring the earth…
