gas fire issues

Hi all

Had my gas safety check yesterday and gas fire has been turned off because it has the wrong coals on it.

So now I either pay £160+ for a new fire or just disconnect it but keep it as a feature? I hardly use it anyway.

Can a woodburner be connected to the same flue that the gas fire used? Its not a deep chimney but in the loft is the silver pipe going out.

  • Hello BB

You might be able to buy spare coals, you will need to accurately identify the fire, it should have a data plate or badge (usually just a sticker these days) giving all the info you need i.e. make, model & Gas council number G.C. no. you can then order new coals for the fire. These can also be very expensive, but not as much as a new fire. Unfortunately you will need to have the fire checked again to make sure it is operating safely.
  • I tried to find coals but can only find loose ones where as this fire should have 2 large pieces.
The manufacturer is no longer in business I assume it has never had the correct ones since the house was built 10 years ago.

I've found some new ones on gumtree/ebay so might just have to buy one of them.

It's going to be cheaper to buy the correct coals for your fire, than it is to buy a woodburner and get it fitted correctly.

If you give the manufacturers name, fire model, model no and any other info on ff the data plate on the fire, some of us may be able to help.
  • ok thank you I will post these later.

The company went bust in 2008, so the chances of getting coals for it, is very slim.

I do feel that you will need to get a new fire, as already stated, fitting the wrong coals may end up killing you, as ceramic sets are designed to work on a particular fire and set up, so the fire does not spill fumes into the room and the gas combusts properly.

Sorry cannot be of any good news for you.
  • OP, just incase you weren't sure & you get some more advice, rusty DOES know what he is talking about
