Advice re adhesive foil strip above integrated dishwasher...

One quick question.... our kitchen fitter has put a 2 inch strip of self adhesive foil underneath the worksurface above the integrated dishwasher and he has done the same above the integrated washer/dryer.....is this wide enough or should it go all the way to the back of the worksurface? (I did notice beforehand that this is the only foil that was supplied with the dishwasher).

Thanks for your help

Normal situation - as long as the appliances sit snugly underneath the worksurface.

It doesn't....there is a 1 inch gap above the work surface and the dishwasher and the same between the washer/dryer and the work surface too?

Irrespective of the gap it is good practise to install this foil on laminate or wood worktops above dishwasher. It needn't go to the back.

  • Just checked my dishwasher...what benefits does this foil give?

It helps to protect the underside of the worktop from steam when you open the dishwasher.

I Am getting a bit confused now....is a 2inch wide strip enough and is our dishwasher not installed properly if it's 1 inch gap between the top of the dishwasher and the bottom of the work surface? (The dishwasher is an intergrated appliance)
  • I wouldn't expect a gap between the work surface and the appliance. The shield then protects the small amount of work surface that is exposed to steam when you open the dishwasher.

Perhaps you could post a picture?

If your kitchen is 720mm carcase with 150mm plinth, the dishwasher should be more of less flush to the worktop. If not, its not been correctly installed.

Once the gap is closed, there is no need for the steam guard to go any deeper than the front of the dishwasher.

  • Had a similar problem a year ago when a fitter installed a dishwasher while I was at work. Came home to find a 20mm gap between worktop and top of dishwasher so phoned the installers. They sent another guy out within an hour and he simply unscrewed the washer from the cabinet and extended the legs. Came back a couple of days later with a new plinth.
