To put a door on the kitchen or not?
The house I am renovating has a very small kitchen 1.7m x 2.8m. The door separating it from the middle room (it's an Edwardian terrace) opens outwards into the middle room. Hubby and builder want to get rid of the door and casing and leave it open to the middle room. They say that it will make the kitchen seem bigger. I'm…

Freezer heat and air vents
I am considering drilling out some air vents at the back of my kitchen worktop..as the freezer that i have underneath the worktop produces a lot of heat from its motor and this heat nowhere to escape to. (I've discovered that my freezer motor runs for about 10 minutes about 2 or 3 times each hour during the day time and…

Help needed plumbing dishwasher

Today I got my 1st ever dishwasher (2nd hand from a friend for £50!) but I'm a bit stuck on how to connect the waste pipe. I'm going to connect it under the sink but the sink end is a screw…

Need to replace UPVC window handle.
I have managed to snap the handle off this afternoon. I dont know all the technical names, but a metal loop thingy has snapped and sheared the handle from the retaining piece screwed onto the window itself. The long and short of it is buy another handle and replace it myself, which thankfully looks a DIY job even I can do…

When I asked him about it, he said they cut them out later... but how does he know where they are?? He's coming back tomorrow to fit a skirting board and hopefully reveal them again. Does this sound right?

Dyson DC 19 versus Henry
I am looking to buy a vacuum cleaner and it is between a dyson and a henry. Currys is doing a great deal on the dyson multi floor DC19 at £169. I am very tempted to buy it but have heard good feedback on Henry esp as it is no frills and I would prefer something for an elderly person to use. Also Henry's spare parts are…

Removing gloss paint from Victorian tiles
The house I'm renovating has the original Victorian wall tiles in the vestibule - only they are covered over with white gloss paint. What's the best way of removing it and restoring them to their former glory? I don't want to just go at them with paint stripper and ruin them. Thanks

Plaster a chase
Hello We had a full re-wire and now i need to start covering the chased walls. I have never done this before. We went and brought some Wilkinsons patching plaster. Is this any good?? Does anyone have any tips on how to get a good finish. We plan to paper over it, so luckily it doesn't have to be A* grade finish :) Cheers

Granite Worktops -what do you think.
For those of you with granite worktops in the kitchen, what do you think? What can you put on them and what will mark? Will teacups be ok or not. I wouldn't put pans down on them anyway but I would like a bit more of an idea about looking after them- do's and don'ts - that sort of thing. What do you clean them with that…

Wasps - how long once nest access shut off
I noticed a few wasps inside a room of my house one day - 12 year old got stung! Then noticed that there were lots of them buzzing around outside and crawling up between the plastic bit of cladding and the wall - 1st floor extension/garage. I subsequently sprayed some wasp nest killer stuff up between the cladding and the…

I've started noticing lately that when the dishwasher is on in the kitchen downstairs, there is an unpleasant smell (like rotten eggs) coming from the bathroom upstairs. It only seems to smell when the dishwasher is on...it doesn't smell the usually, and I haven't noticed it smell when the washing machine is on. Anyone got…
