What's the point of security lighting?
(A bit of a follow on from a previous question I asked about the need for external lighting in my house.) Most of my neighbours have motion sensor floodlights that turn on when you approach the front or back of the house. Forgive me if I sound a bit dense, but what's the point of this? Surely a burglar wouldn't be deterred…

Builder finished work on house yesterday and I am not happy with the finished work
We purchased a house 2 months ago and it needed a lot of work. I got a number of builders in and got 3 quotes. I ended up going with the cheapest but not because of the cost. I got on with the guy and some of his suggestions were very good. Anyway the work started fine and I was very impressed with this works on the house…

Bathroom fan wiring
Hi, my humidity bathroom fan is wired straight to the lighting circuit within my loft and switches on and off depending on the humidity level. Fine and dandy but 'bathroom smells' don't trigger it sadly. I would like to put change the setup so that it comes on when the bathroom light is switched on and turns off again…

Door Frame help needed
Really hope someone can help..does anyone know where I can get a door frame for my composite door? I've tried all my local places but no luck! Obviously it would have to be made to fit my door size - size of door is approx 810mm wide x 2010 height. I only have the door itself (composite) but no frame (don't ask!) Am really…

French door blinds in kitchen
I am getting new French doors added to our kitchen. The doors are at the back of an extension leading into the back garden. The cooker is on the side wall right by the doors and I was thinking that steam etc from the coker would make blinds go sticky etc. Are there blinds specifically designed for these situations and what…

Dura Bed Mattress
We've been looking at mattresses for a while, and think we have found 'the one'. So comfy we didn't want to get off it. We tried to find one that wasn't made by one of the bigger companies (i.e. Silentnight) following the advice we found here. The one we found was by Dura Bed. The salesman assured us it was a good quality…

Very low water pressure on gauge on combi-boiler
Hi, bit worried as the pressure on my shower has been really pathetic since the "authorised" central heating engineer did the annual service on behalf of the council in my rented flat last month. Totally unrelated (or it may be), is the fact the my toilet makes a horrendous fog-horn racket as soon as you flush it, then…

Fitting a dishwasher, help appreciated
We really would like a dishwasher, but not sure how we are going to fit it in our kitchen. If anyone can advise, it'd be appreciated. On the back wall, the sink is above a double cupboard (is that the right description? i.e. two doors, one opens left, one right). The sink is a 1.5bowl, with plumbing underneath. To the…

best heating option?
Hi all, I live in a medium sized cottage and I have a great logburner that heats most of the house up, I have no central heating and rely on 4 small storage heaters (kitchen/lounge/downstairs toilet/bathroom) to take the edge off things in the morning until I light my logburner at teatime (or in the mornings if its really…

Hi all, I am looking for something to fit to external opening french doors to do the following. 1 Stop the door flying open in the wind 2 Stop the door slamming shut in the wind. 3 Lock the door in the open position when required. Underlay really necessary?
Moved into new house that has no flooring and need to carpet on the cheap. I got a nice piece of really good quality carpet (RRP new £34 per square m) 2nd hand in the local ads. The disadvantage of it being good quality is it has a woven back. Is underlay really necessary? I need to do up the house is a VERY MSE fashion. I…

15mm Floorboards
I have some broken floorboards in a room I am renovating and thought replacing them would be a fairly straight forward job. Problem is they are 15mm thick and 144mm wide. Having been to B&Q and Wickes they only seem to do 18mm or 20.5mm thickness. I would like to find somewhere that does do 15mm thickness if anyone knows…

Got flat pack furniture delivered - slight dilemma
Hi, I moved in to a place about 6 months ago, and have just got round to buying furniture. I needed something of reasonable quality (not necessarily last forever, but a good few years), cheap price. I found a set (wardrobe, chest of drawers, bedside cabinet) for £265 all in (inc. delivery) and went for it, knowing a friend…

10 yr guarantee on radiator but manufacturer gone bust, now faulty, is plumber who fi
I had a new radiator fitted by a local plumber 5 years ago, the radiator has a 10 year guarantee and has started to leak. It needs replacing. The maker of the radiator has gone bust. The plumber says it is nothing to do with him. Do I have any redress from the plumber who fitted the radiator?

New curtains needed - odd sizes
Hi all. I need some new curtains but the sizing is a bit odd. They’re for patio doors and are 200cm x 200cm each. The width isn’t a problem, but the drop is. It seems to be 182cm or 220cm in the vast majority of stores. Due to the brackets on the current curtain pole, and the ceiling not being particularly high, I can’t…

fitting of bamboo flooring
I'm thinking of getting solid bamboo flooring put in my kitchen - what would be a reasonable cost for paying for fitting per square metre? I was thinking of buying the boards from the bamboo flooring company (natural vertical). Long shot - but can anyone recommend anyone near Plymouth? Also, has anyone laid it in their…
