I had a new radiator fitted by a local plumber 5 years ago, the radiator has a 10 year guarantee and has started to leak. It needs replacing. The maker of the radiator has gone bust. The plumber says it is nothing to do with him. Do I have any redress from the plumber who fitted the radiator?

Where is it leaking from?! The valve or the actual rad panel.

Even if its the valves you cant blaim the plumber in any way, thats just mean. If it is the valves though they might just need tightening up, if its the panel you can get central heating additives that can block up small holes, just be careful when you flush the system as the hole will likely come back.

Is your central heating system regularly maintained, flushed, dosed and checked for levels of dosing chemicals in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations and can you prove it?

If not, then even if the radiator manufacturer still existed, you would probably have no redress.

  • It is leaking from the rad..........when he sold me the rad he stressed the importance of the 10 year guarantee, the rad was over a hundred pounds more than a Stelrad at the time, I feel that I have paid for the guarantee and now he does not want to know. That said I do not know my rights, if the maker has gone bust is the plumber liable?
  • The plumber didn't sell you a 10 yr guarantee. He sold you a radiator with a manufacturers guarantee.

    He is not liable.

the makers warranty may well be 2/3/5/10 yrs, but the tradesmen usually only give 1 yr warranty on their own workmanship.
a tradesman cannot be held liable for the products warranty.
    Get some gorm.

No hes definatley not liable, he has no control over the quality and making of the radiator. How can you try and blaim this poor guy, i understand your disappointed and might be out of pocket but it isnt his fault.

Has the company definately gone bust or could they have merged/ been bought out?!

As the above have said, the plumber can't be held responsible for someone elses guarantee. Its the luck of the draw.
