Oil filled Radiator or convection heater?
I want to buy an electric heater as a back up to the GCH. Has anyone any thoughts on the relative merits of oil filled radiators and convection heaters (or indeed any other type) particularly with regard to fuel efficiency.

How unlucky can I get?
Arrrrgggghhhh! Yesterday spent hours tracking down a particular floor tile my wife wanted from B&Q, spent Monday morning driving down to the shop, getting the assistant to forklift them of the top shelf, humping them into the car driving them back home, humping them down the drive and into the kitchen, spent £300. Today…

Pruning saw recommendations?
After getting several outrageous quotes for getting a tall hedge pruned we are thinking of doing it ourselves. We have ladders but need a hand pruning saw to cut through privet branches upto the thickness of a mans arm-OH is youngish and fit so if I hold the ladder he should be able to manage!! Can anyone recommend a…

Electric Oven's not heating up
I used the oven last Thusday, and everything was fine. When I turned it on today to reheat a Pizza, it decided not to work at all. The fan and inside light work fine, but the thermostat light was OFF, it flashed very vaguely when the oven's switched between grill and oven etc. The oven is fairly new and it's been rarely…

How hard is fitting your own kitchen?
Just wondered if anyone has experiencing fitting their own kitchens and if they'd recommend it (I'm surprised I can't find anyone asking this elsewhere!). My bf and I are fairly good at DIY and want to save money on a new kitchen. It wouldn't have any especially complicated bits (no gas and bf is an electrical engineer),…

Reccomendation for pvc window fitters in north shields
Hi, Everyone says you should go by word of mouth rather than listen to the patter of a salesman... Has anyone had their windows fitted in North Shields, Tyne and Wear recently. Who was good. Don't have measurements but roughly what kind of price would I expect for: 3 average windows, 1 large bedroom window and a patio…

Replacement for Nobilia kitchen required
We moved into a new build property just over 3 years ago and the supplied kitchen was from Nobilia. We have found the kitchen to be of poor design and when asking for extra units were quoted silly money from the Kuchenhaus chain of Nobilia shops. As the foil door fronts are starting to bubble we have decided to start from…

Electricians responsibility?
I just bought a house which had been refurbished by an electrician, apparently all the re-wiring, new lights etc installed by him. I've since been up in the attic and seen that none of the low voltage lights have fire caps over the fittings and I'm guessing that's why he didn't replace all the insulation that he removed to…

Fridge/Freezer Dilema struggling to make a decision
I am struggling to make a decision on what to do for the best with my frost free fridge/freezer (its 3yrs old). Problems - fridge and freezer seals are damaged thanks to kids spilling stuff! Fridge never goes off and keeps freezing up at the back so i have to manually defrost it once a day by turning it off. Most likely…

All weather garden surfaces??
I've just moved house and part of the garden has chipped slate, this is a good all-weather surface and looks nice but my toddler keeps throwing the stones and putting them in her mouth so it's not ideal. Are there any other all-weather surfaces which aren't too expensive apart from paving or decking? It's only a small…

Drain smells after heavy rain?
The drain outside my kitchen that the sink, washing machine and dishwasher all empty into alway smell terribly after heavy rain. This wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't that the smell seems no back up the pipes and into the kitchen! Everything in the dishwasher smells like a wet dog now :( I do blast the drain with the hose…

Need a Quiet Fridge Freezer
Hi We're in the the process of doing up a new house and need a new fridge freezer. We now have an open plan living room/kitchen (which we've never had before) and our existing fridge freezer (that is slowly packing in) is driving us nuts with the noises it makes! It's always made these noises but before we've been able to…

Papering on top of wallpaper?
Hi, Can you tell me if its a bad idea to paper on top of existing wallpaper? The reason I ask is that last time I used a steamer on the walls in my living room, the heat started to bring off the plaster underneath in very large patches which means if I try to use the steamer now on the existing paper, I will end up having…

Best place to sell electric cooker
Where is the best place to sell an electric cooker? We just moved house and the kitchen in the new place has a built in hob/oven, so our old one has been sitting out in the shed for the past 2 weeks. Cooker itself is only 18 months old. It's a ceramic topped Belling, which cost about £600. I had a quick look on Ebay and…

Worcester Bosch or Vaillant boiler
Just had quote no 2 in on a re-sited, new combi boiler. Unlike the other heating engineer, this guy recommends WB. He says they give a 6 year parts and labour warranty (may go to 7 years soon apparently) and their CS and supply time on parts is superior/faster than Vaillant. Plus Vaillant has only a 2 yr guarantee. I…

Access to roof to clear blocked gutter - advice needed
We live in a tall semi detached Victorian house in outer London. The houses here are very close to each other, divided by a 5ft high cement wall. There is a rear extension containing breakfast room and kitchen which is narrower than the front of the house. Historically there was a gap between rear extension and the…

Integrated electric oven - can I convert the grill to gas?
Is this possible. I have never had a fancy integrated oven before moving here. Its electric and a double oven I cannot stand electric and whilst I get on ok with the main oven, the grill is a nightmare, it burns everything, I have no idea how to control it. I miss my old eye level gas grill. I think I'd be happy to keep…

Great B&Q loft insulation deal
B&Q currently have an offer on space blanket insulation - 70% off the king size version of the knave space blanket. This makes the price per roll £5.99, (normally 19.98). Dimensions are 4m long by 1.14m wide. Depth is 200 mm. As I'm looking to supplement the insulation in my new house I've checked other supplier (Homebase,…
