Integrated electric oven - can I convert the grill to gas?

Is this possible. I have never had a fancy integrated oven before moving here. Its electric and a double oven

I cannot stand electric and whilst I get on ok with the main oven, the grill is a nightmare, it burns everything, I have no idea how to control it. I miss my old eye level gas grill.

I think I'd be happy to keep the main bit but can you have a separate grill to the oven? or because its a double oven is it all in one?

Are there any benefits to changing the whole oven to gas ?

You can't convert the electric grill on your existing integrated electric double oven/grill to use gas. You need a fundamentally different appliance. It might be possible to replace your current setup with an electric oven and separate gas grill, but this would be very unusual. If you really want a gas grill you will probably find it's easiest to have a gas oven/grill fitted as a replacement for the whole unit.

On top of gas oven purchase price, bear in mind that a gas oven must be fitted by a GasSafe registered engineer. You can find your nearest ones here to get quotes:

    http://www.gassaferegister.co.uk/about/gas_safe_register_engineers.aspx

It will be worth pricing it up for them to supply and fit, and for you to buy it yourself and just pay them to fit.

Gas ovens are cheaper to run but cost more to buy. I'm not sure how it works out financially over the life-time of it.

Do you plan to sell the house any time soon? Most people prefer electric ovens so a gas oven may put some buyers off. Wouldn't stop them buying the house but they'll be trying to knock the price of changing the oven off.

Re the electric grill, the temperature should be adjustable somehow. Our top oven is also a grill. There's one dial to turn for off/oven/grill and a second dial which is the oven temperature dial. Around the temperature dial is an "L", an "M" and an "H" which is Low/Medium/High for the grill temperature. I've never had a problem with the grill burning things but the electric grill is probably a lot quicker than your old gas grill so for starters trying grilling things for a shorter time.

More expensive parts involved and you have to do annual gas safety checks on gas appliances. Electric ones are fairly easy to build and don't need annual checks.

Would be cheaper to learn how to use the electric grill.

You can probably find the manual online.

ho ho, of course there is a manual

however, i tend to cook by sight, so with gas, i just remember being able to control it by seeing what it was doing, moving the control and it being instant

electric isnt like that, i feel im cooking blind

its strange as i dont know anyone that prefers an electric oven, it was something that made us query this property when we bought it that the oven was electric! gas is much more controllable, however we have a gas hob so i figured that i would cope

to be honest we've never had our gas appliances checked, let alone yearly

Why can't you grill by sight? My grill is electric and I leave the door open when grilling, just as I would with a gas grill.

i do, what i meant was i could set the grill to a certain flame (by looking at the flame, not the dial) and know instinctively how that was going to cook something and the time and strength of it

i dont feel electric has that connection to it, i have to use the dial to know whether its high, medium or low and this seems to lack control, you cant change the settings immediately, there is less controllability to the strength of it

im a very tactile, kinesthetic cook, i cook by sight of the food, flame and instinct and i find that only being able to use a dial and i dont know what that translates as when its on is very frustrating.

i suppose i will stick with it but it just means that i hardly use the grill anymore
