Need a Quiet Fridge Freezer

Hi
We're in the the process of doing up a new house and need a new fridge freezer.
We now have an open plan living room/kitchen (which we've never had before) and our existing fridge freezer (that is slowly packing in) is driving us nuts with the noises it makes!
It's always made these noises but before we've been able to shut the kitchen door on it, but now we can't!
So we need a quiet fridge freezer.. ideally silent (if that's even possible)!
Imagine sitting in a silent room (there's no cars or anything) reading a book and you just want complete peace!
So tell me.. what fridge freezers do you have an are they quiet?
Thanks in advance
Bex

Hi Bexm
I invested in a new frost-free fridge/freezer about a year ago. Apart from its primary function (it performs this very well) it comes with an added bonus - a huge variety of noises (some loud - falling waste ice and some less so - contented chickens??)! The blurb that comes with it even has a helpful list of sounds to expect along with cartoon style pictures - nice touch! It resides in my kitchen so not a problem.
Frankly I didn't consider noise at all when I bought it but since a compressor is involved in most (all?) fridges/freezers you cannot have a silent one I would have thought. I found this link which provides data on noise as part of the review. It costs £1 for a trial to get the info but might be worth a look: http://www.which.co.uk/home-and-garden/kitchen/guides/how-to-buy-the-best-fridge-freezer/which-fridge-freezer/
Good luck.

does this room come in a shape that would enable you to put some sort of divider across? this is why i have never wanted an open plan kitchen/lounge, i want to be shut off from the kitchen area
i know that ikea do these sort of sliding things that hang on sliders on the ceiling0 -

We also have the contented chickens in our Fridge, so much so that it is part of the family now, we sit eating dinner and he will just chirp away:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
Now this is for real: we have 3 chickens in the back yard and it is only the experienced ear that can tell who chirp, chickens or the Whirpool!:DFive exclamation marks the sure sign of an insane mind!!!!!

Not helping the OP (sorry) but honestly speaking avantra my German creation with its steely exterior and Germanic efficiency contrasts wonderfully with the thought that chickens reside therein (no doubt performing a vital role)!!!!!
Time for my medication methinks.......
Back to the OP - I had a built in arrangement immediately prior to what I have now and although the housing hid the fridge/freezer (so pretty much boxed in) it didn't make it silent. You have to let the air circulate which equals background noise.
Based on a quick Google, low noise seems to indicate high price e.g. SMEG. However, what actually constitutes acceptable noise levels revolves around the subjective. IF something annoys you e.g. a ticking clock, the fact that it's only 2dbs (actual sound as measured) doesn't make it less annoying. I cannot stand the sound of a ticking clock whereas my son has a 'station clock' on his wall and he has no issue with it (like me and my 'chickens', he loves it).
Open plan brings all sounds into play (and if it's annoying, it's annoying). Short of earplugs, reading in the bedroom, building a fully enclosed space or moving, even acquiring the quietest fridge in the world may not help. 'Masking' the sound? This sort of kit might be considered: http://www.amazon.co.uk/s/?ie=UTF8&keywords=white+noise+machine&!!!!!googhydr-21&index=aps&hvadid=7970043753&ref=pd_sl_6yv5ckmhi4_e
I wish you luck whichever solution you opt for.
Cheers,

Thanks guys!
Not amazingly helpful but you have definitely entertained me!
I've got chickens in my fridge too as it happens..!:T
I can't put up a divider as it's not the right shape..
I also get annoyed by ticking clocks! hahah!
From your suggestions though I have decided to sign up for the £1 trial of which!
Although this has confused me even more as some fridges are ranked as very quiet but then the customer reviews say they are very noisy!
Going to shopping on the weekend armed with Which on the internet on my phone and shall check them all against it and just hope the one I choose lives up to it's review!0 -

This sounds eerily familiar. Is your fridge/freezer a Bosch?0
