Painting architraves etc
I had to strip a couple of architraves due to peeling paint, but in other cases I've sanded down to the pale yellow undercoat. Will there be any obvious difference in appearance once both are painted? Secondly, for the bare wood I intend to apply a couple of coats of Dulux white primer and undercoat (one paint, does both)…

Fitted kitched: can I tell if supplier is going bust?
Hello everyone, Two years ago I ordered a fitted kitchen and paid half the cost. Work was almost completed, and I paid most of the remaining balance in dribs and drabs, on request from the supplier. Then he took a big payment; failed to turn up at the agreed time to finish the job; and ever since has been fobbing me off…

Fitting new door, is it worth fitting new windows at the same time?
A vandal broke my partly glazed front door last night so I need to replace it. Is it worth refitting new windows at the same time since they are long past their best and needed replacing anyway. Do they add the same value of their cost to the property? If so where do I start in the double glazing maze of finding suitable…

Do we need architect, if not where do we start with (eco) house renovations?
We are going to have our house renovated soon and wonder whether it is necessary to employ an architect. If we organise the work ourselves where do we start? I am very sensitive to most unnatural things, and have come across an environmentally conscious architect who can advise us on suitable materials, contractors,…

What price for a new uPVC back door and frame?
Somebody attempted to burgle us yesterday, they didn't get in but they have damaged the back door and frame. We've just had a quote of £1,280 to replace it (with a slightly better, reinforced one with a cat flap.) Does this sound right? Also, can anyone 'in the know' tell me if a hardwood door would be more secure? A…

Smelly washing machine
Hi, I have a Beko washing machine that has recently started smelling. The clothes come out with a 'dirty water' smell and I'm not sure why. I've tried putting it on a wash with a few different things such as white vinegar but nothing has worked. There doesn't appear to be a filter that could be clogged. Any ideas? :-)

Removing marks off wooden worktop
Hi guys, We're due to move out of our rented house in a couple of weeks and I had a question about the work tops in the kitchen.
