Tiling an ensuite..

Options
We are in the process of replacing our ensuite DIY. He has recently DIY'd the loo under the stars including fitted cupboards and made quite a good job!

We have decided to tile all the walls in the ensuite, but there are two things we are just not sure about. It maybe its down to personal taste, or there maybe logical reasons behind these decisions.

My OH would alsolike to tile the floor, however I think this will be just too many tiles, and have quite a cold/hard feeling. What do people generally do with the floor if all the walls are tiled?

He also wants to tile right to the floor, with no skirting boards at all (its not going to be a wet room) I think this is going to look harsh and will then make any type of alternative flooring difficult to fit (eg vinyl)

Others have told me that as its an ensuite (ie just off the bedroom) rather than a family bathroom, that it should have carpet, (thats what its got now)

Anyone got any experience or can advise on the pros and cons please?

My bathroom is currently work in process. The floor and walls are both tiled and I was worried about the lack of a skirting board. I had the idea of using thin border tiles to make a skirting board effect and I love it. I don't find it cold and hard and it's much better than the carpet in the en-suite.

Here's a pic, but excuse the missing bit of grouting as it's not finished yet.

I sell tiles so may be biased but my bathroom, ensuite and utility is done exactly as you describe and its really easy to clean.
warmth wise, they are only as cold as the substrate\ambient temperature - i never notice it. if your in an old draughty house then you might.

Eeew - carpet in an en-suite? Please don't tell me that this is common, people. I don't like the idea of a carpet and loo combination, but is this just me?

We our doing our main bathroom at the moment, but will shortly be looking to re-do the ensuite floor. At the moment we have tiled walls and a lino wood effect floor (which I don't like but is better than the cheap nasty laminate in other bathroom and kitchen!).

Our ensuite walls are entirely tiled, although we do have skirting boards (and are going to keep them). I like the idea of border tiles though and have seen a few that look good. I definitely wouldn't want carpet though! That would be ripped out within minutes of me moving in if I was a buyer.

Ewwww no carpet! We ripped out the main bathroom and en-suite when we bought our house last year, both of which had old suites and carpet. We used the same tiles in both rooms, this range:

    http://www.toppstiles.co.uk/tprod919/section1179/Zamora-Brown-Wall-and-Floor-Tile-30x30cm.html

Dark brown on the floor, light brown on the walls (enlarge the right-hand thumbnail under the large picture). Sadly we didn't get the wavy feature tile thing. We don't have skirting boards and it looks neat. :)

At a previous place I had white and navy blue tiled walls in the bathroom and replaced the blue carpet with a mid-blue floor tile. Looked lovely.

You are unlikely to find any buyer in the future who wants to take up the tiles and put in vinyl or carpet instead so don't worry about that!

I agree with you all about the carpet. it was down when we bought the house, and I feel exactly the same as all of you, except I was told by someone that ensuites tended to have carpet? (By a person who doesnt have any sons, so maybe its not an issue for her!) lol

I do like the idea of the boarder tiles, something to consider!

In all the houses we viewed, the en-suites had tiles/vinyl. Our house was the only one with carpet! If you don't like carpet, don't keep the carpet. :) I can't imagine any future buyers of your house would think it strange it not having carpet. Unless the person you spoke to comes round to view the place. ;)

I personally don't like carpet in the bathroom, so that was the first thing I did when I bought my bungalow. Carpet out straight to skip. Others prefer carpet, like my brother as he can come straight out the shower knowing he won't slip.
